Our department really values your opinion and suggestions for what we can do to improve your time at the University of Bath. There’s several new things we’ve rolled out for this academic year, all of which have been introduced in response to what you’ve been asking for.

So, next time you receive that link to an online survey, or get asked to answer some questions, please do spare us some time! What you feed back to us plays a big part in what we do. For example…

You wanted… more meat-free and healthy food options

We opened The Patch in September 2017, which offers a purely vegetarian and vegan menu of locally sourced food.

You wanted… a more sustainable campus

As well as KeepCups, you can now buy one of our reusable Leave No Trace containers from outlets for £6.50. Don’t forget that using this instead of a disposable one at our eateries gives you 20p off and a stamp on your loyalty card.

You wanted… to spend your Eat and Drink credit in the city

CAFÉ at the Virgil Building is now open in the city centre, so you can spend your Eat and Drink credit when you’re in town.

You wanted… to know more about what you were eating

We’ve improved communication about dietary requirements, so you can now find details on all menus and food counters.


Fountain Canteen’s new value corner is a huge hit

Hopefully by now you’re all aware of the new ‘value corner’ in Fountain Canteen, which launched last month.

The new area (just to the left as you walk in the main entrance of Fountain Canteen) is home to a super value menu where everything is just £1.

You can view a full menu here, but the types of food on offer include…

• Homemade soup
• Beans on toast
• Sausage and mash
• Pasties
• Vegetable pie
• Steak slice
• Cakes
• Doughnuts

Plus different toasties and crumpets that you can toast yourself.

As if all of this wasn’t enough value already, you also get a free tea or coffee with any purchase if you bring your own reusable cup. Bargain!

Value corner


The new corner was introduced to provide a budget food and drink option to students on campus. It’s clearly been popular, as our survey showed that 86% of students rated it as excellent value for money.

Bank Holiday opening hours

Monday 29 August is a Bank Holiday and so, with the University holiday following on the next day, there will be some changes to our eateries' opening hours.

4 West Cafe

4 West Cafe will be closed Bank Holiday Monday 29 August and Tuesday 30 August.

Claverton Rooms

Claverton Rooms will be closed Bank Holiday Monday 29 August and Tuesday 30 August.

Fountain Canteen

Fountain Canteen is closed for the summer period. It will reopen once students arrive on campus for the new academic year.

Lime Tree

Lime Tree is open during the Bank Holiday weekend and University holiday.

Summer has arrived

It may have felt like the summer sun has taken a long time to arrive this year, but here in AHS we're well underway with our summer business.

We've been hosting conferences, summer schools and holiday makers for the last few weeks.

So far we've hosted organisations including the Samaritans, who were here for their three regions conference, the Research Methods Festival 2016, and this year's MEI conference.

Make sure you head over to our Conference and Events Twitter page to take a look at the kind of things our guests got up to at the conferences.

As for guest accommodation, we've already welcomed more than 40,000 visitors so far and we're looking forward to saying hello to those who are yet to stay with us.

With the change in business over the summer, it's not just conference delegates and bed and breakfast guests that we welcome to the University. We've also hired several new casual members of staff, and we're delighted they've joined the team.

Elsewhere in AHS, we've launched a new menu in Parade Bar and Grill. The venue will be closed between 1 August and 9 September while a new extraction system is fitted in the kitchen, so head over there in July to get your teeth into the new menu before the new academic year begins.

And with the new term in mind, student accommodation application have been received and are currently being worked through by our student Accommodation team as we move towards the arrival of our new student population in September. It's hard to believe that our new students will be here in just a few short weeks, when AHS will return to our student-focussed business.

Springing into action

April has been a month of new things for AHS. We've got a new website, we've welcomed applications for accommodation from new students and we're planning exciting new things for our bars and eateries.

New website

You may have noticed that AHS webpages look a bit different this month. Launched on Wednesday 6 April, we were the first section to go live on the new website, just in time for students to apply for their accommodation for the September 2016 arrivals.

Digital Marketing and Communications have been working tirelessly for the last 18 months developing a new website and Content Management System for the University. Now it's here. It looks great, will scale with your mobile device, and make finding information easier for users.

We're now working on the transition of Security, and that should be live in the very near future.

New arrivals

Applications for student accommodation opened at 9am on Tuesday 12 April and we can't wait to welcome this year's cohort to our accommodation in the city and on campus in September.

This year there's more accommodation available to students than ever, with four new properties in the city centre that are managed by CRM Students.

New look Wessex Restaurant

Over the next few weeks there will be some changes in Wessex Restaurant. Keep your eyes peeled for some great new developments coming to our fine dining restaurant in June.

Looking towards the summer

The students will be leaving us in the next few months as their first year of study comes to an end, but that doesn't mean things stop for AHS. That's just the start of one of our busiest periods in the year.

It isn't long until we begin welcoming thousands of bed and breakfast guests, backpackers, families, summer schools and conference delegates to our events venues and guest accommodation on campus and in the city.

We're recruiting more staff and will soon be launching our summer campaign. We look forward to meeting some see some new faces soon and welcoming them into the AHS team.


Fairtrade Gold Award for the University of Bath

On Friday 11 March we received a Fairtrade Gold award in the category of Best Fairtrade University or College in the South West 2016.

It's the second year running that we've been given the award and we're absolutely delighted that our continued support for the Fairtrade Foundation has been so successful.

Su Steenberg, PA to Director of AHS/Project Coordinator, was at the awards and collected the certificate on behalf of the University.

The event took place at the At-Bristol Science Centre and hosted by ethical beauty and wellbeing expert, Liz Earle MBE, whose range of Fairtrade Gold jewellery was recently displayed at The Edge.

Following on from Fairtrade Fortnight, the ceremony continued the Sit Down for Breakfast, Stand Up For Farmers campaign which highlights the plight of poorly paid farmers in developing countries. This is something that is at the very core of the Fairtrade initiative.

There were 68 organisations shortlisted for the awards, including the University of Bath. Between us we've spent nearly £500,000 on Fairtrade products, making a massive difference to the lives of producers in developing countries.

The Easter Bank Holiday is almost here. Students are going home for the break and and the University will close from Good Friday until Tuesday 29 March.

This means there will be some changes to our eateries opening hours between now and Monday 4 April.

Special guests for Fairtrade Fortnight

We're very excited this Fairtrade Fortnight. Each year we work hard to promote Fairtrade products, especially so during these two weeks, and we have some very special guests arriving on campus to talk to us about Fairtrade during the campaign.

On Wednesday 9 March at 1.30pm we'll be hosting an afternoon of special events in The Edge.

We'll hear talks from Michael Gidney, the chief executive of the Fairtrade Foundation, and Ana Maria, a Nicaraguan Fairtrade producer. There will also be short films, presentations and a panel discussion.

Michael Gidney became Fairtrade Foundation CEO in December 2012, having previously been deputy executive director from 2009. He sat on the Fairtrade board between 2002 and 2008. Before working with the Fairtrade Foundation he was a teacher in Kenya.

He said, “Fairtrade can provide farmers and workers with the skills and confidence to secure significant benefits for their communities.

“We have made fantastic progress over the last few years in taking the idea of Fairtrade to the mainstream, but there is much more still to do. Too many producers are still too vulnerable to the volatility of globalised trade.

"We need to reach more farmers and workers in developing countries, with tools that are relevant to them today, and to do that we must find new ways of engaging more UK companies.”

One of those farmers in developing countries is Ana Maria Gonzalez Narvaez, a 56-year-old Nicaraguan Fairtrade coffee and cocoa farmer.

Ana Maria is in Bristol for two weeks, invited by the Bristol Link With Nicaragua and Bristol Fairtrade. She'll be visiting schools in the city, and on Wednesday 9 March she'll be here at the University of Bath, talking to us in The Edge about her experiences and how Fairtrade has helped her.

Ana Maria is a single parent. She's already raised her own, grown up son, but she also looks after two younger children for her neighbour. She is a member of the Julio Hernandez Co-operative which is made up of 42 small-holder farmers and was set up in 2002 as part of the SOPPEXCCA union of co-ops.

Ana Maria also grows beans and corn on her small-holding and keeps goats.

This is her first time travelling outside Nicaragua, so we hope you all give her and Michael Gidney a big University of Bath welcome.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Each year we help Fairtrade Foundation to celebrate, support and promote their global trade initiatives through Fairtrade Fortnight.

This year Fairtrade Fortnight will take place from Monday 29 February to Sunday 13 March.

Over the course of two weeks, we'll be hosting special events and selling limited edition Fairtrade products across our bar and eateries.

This year the focus of the Fairtrade Fortnight is on breakfast, and on Monday 29 February customers will be able to start the day with Fairtrade chocolate brownies and banana loaf served in lime tree, Claverton Rooms and Wessex Restaurant from 9.30am to 10.30am.

Staff holding breakfast meetings in those venues on Monday 29 February will also get a free slice of Fairtrade cake if they order Fairtrade tea and coffee for the meeting in advance through

On Wednesday 9 March at 1.30pm we'll be hosting an afternoon of special events in The Edge.

Fresh Start

Welcome to 2016 and welcome back to the University to staff and students! We hope you all enjoyed the holidays.

Here in ahs we're ready and raring to go for a fabulous 2016.

We're kicking things off with a healthy eating campaign, #FreshStart, aimed at getting students to tuck in to the many fruit, veg and salad options in our eateries.

You'll see posters up around campus, on The Parade and around accommodation buildings, promoting the great range of healthy food and drinks available in places like lime tree, Fountain Canteen and Sports Cafe.

We're also running a competition on social media as part of the campaign in which students can win a whole hamper full of healthy snacks and treats.

January has also seen the students working hard revising, preparing for and taking their exams. It's obviously a very important time of their studies and we've been trying to help in any way we can, promoting web content we created with Team Bath to give students advice on how to eat well during the exam period.

At the end of last year, Studentpad - the student accommodation search engine - updated its listings with all the private sector housing for the 2016-2017 academic year. Students looking for private sector housing from September 2016 can come to the West Accommodation Centre and talk to our staff to discuss all things housing-related.

Any queries - whether it's rent, contracts, deposits, where to live, how to budget or anything else - we can help. Visit us Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

We've also been shortlisted for the South West Fairtrade Awards 2016. After winning Gold last year, we're hopeful of repeating our success this time around.

If we do, it will be the perfect way to prepare for the Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations starting on 29 February.
