The Quads and Norwood House amongst some of the best student accommodation in the UK

📥  Accommodation, Students

Bedroom in Norwood House

We’re delighted that The Quads and Norwood House (pictured above) have been listed in the top 50 best student accommodation halls in the UK.

The feedback comes from 10,834 students, who scored seven different elements of their accommodation:

  • Value for money
  • Location
  • Hall management
  • Cleaning
  • Common room or social space
  • Social experience
  • Internet / Wi-Fi

The Quads scored four out of five for value, cleaning, Wi-Fi and management and five out of five for location, social space and social experience, ranking at 29 overall.

One of our students who reviewed the Quads explained, “the social space/lounge area is honestly the best thing, I only go to my room to sleep!”

Another said, “the standard of cleaning is fantastic and maintenance is outstanding. You will almost certainly have a great Uni experience living in the Quads.”

Norwood House scored four out of five across all, apart from location where it scored five out of five, ranking it number 45 overall.

One student reviewing Norwood stated, “I've never experienced something like this. I am now never late. The club downstairs is not that noisy and obviously fun! Rooms are big, and the kitchen is just HUGE. I highly recommend it to all the people who like good view from the window and all the services downstairs.”

Fountain Canteen’s new value corner is a huge hit

📥  Bars and eateries, Students

Hopefully by now you’re all aware of the new ‘value corner’ in Fountain Canteen, which launched last month.

The new area (just to the left as you walk in the main entrance of Fountain Canteen) is home to a super value menu where everything is just £1.

Value corner

You can view a full menu here, but the types of food on offer include…

• Homemade soup
• Beans on toast
• Sausage and mash
• Pasties
• Vegetable pie
• Steak slice
• Cakes
• Doughnuts

Plus different toasties and crumpets that you can toast yourself.

As if all of this wasn’t enough value already, you also get a free tea or coffee with any purchase if you bring your own reusable cup. Bargain!

Value corner

The new corner was introduced to provide a budget food and drink option to students on campus. It’s clearly been popular, as our survey showed that 86% of students rated it as excellent value for money.

Have you tried anything from the new budget menu? We’re always interested to hear feedback, so please do comment below with your thoughts.

Springing into action

April has been a month of new things for AHS. We've got a new website, we've welcomed applications for accommodation from new students and we're planning exciting new things for our bars and eateries.

New website

You may have noticed that AHS webpages look a bit different this month. Launched on Wednesday 6 April, we were the first section to go live on the new website, just in time for students to apply for their accommodation for the September 2016 arrivals.

Digital Marketing and Communications have been working tirelessly for the last 18 months developing a new website and Content Management System for the University. Now it's here. It looks great, will scale with your mobile device, and make finding information easier for users.

The following sections are now live:

We're now working on the transition of Security, and that should be live in the very near future.

New arrivals

Applications for student accommodation opened at 9am on Tuesday 12 April and we can't wait to welcome this year's cohort to our accommodation in the city and on campus in September.

This year there's more accommodation available to students than ever, with four new properties in the city centre that are managed by CRM Students.

New look Wessex Restaurant

Over the next few weeks there will be some changes in Wessex Restaurant. Keep your eyes peeled for some great new developments coming to our fine dining restaurant in June.

And speaking of June...

Looking towards the summer

The students will be leaving us in the next few months as their first year of study comes to an end, but that doesn't mean things stop for AHS. That's just the start of one of our busiest periods in the year.

It isn't long until we begin welcoming thousands of bed and breakfast guests, backpackers, families, summer schools and conference delegates to our events venues and guest accommodation on campus and in the city.

We're recruiting more staff and will soon be launching our summer campaign. We look forward to meeting some see some new faces soon and welcoming them into the AHS team.

Fresh Start

📥  Accommodation, Bars and eateries, Fairtrade, Students

Welcome to 2016 and welcome back to the University to staff and students! We hope you all enjoyed the holidays.

Here in ahs we're ready and raring to go for a fabulous 2016.

We're kicking things off with a healthy eating campaign, #FreshStart, aimed at getting students to tuck in to the many fruit, veg and salad options in our eateries.

You'll see posters up around campus, on The Parade and around accommodation buildings, promoting the great range of healthy food and drinks available in places like lime tree, Fountain Canteen and Sports Cafe.

We're also running a competition on social media as part of the campaign in which students can win a whole hamper full of healthy snacks and treats.

January has also seen the students working hard revising, preparing for and taking their exams. It's obviously a very important time of their studies and we've been trying to help in any way we can, promoting web content we created with Team Bath to give students advice on how to eat well during the exam period.

At the end of last year, Studentpad - the student accommodation search engine - updated its listings with all the private sector housing for the 2016-2017 academic year. Students looking for private sector housing from September 2016 can come to the West Accommodation Centre and talk to our staff to discuss all things housing-related.

Any queries - whether it's rent, contracts, deposits, where to live, how to budget or anything else - we can help. Visit us Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

We've also been shortlisted for the South West Fairtrade Awards 2016. After winning Gold last year, we're hopeful of repeating our success this time around.

If we do, it will be the perfect way to prepare for the Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations starting on 29 February.

Holidays are coming...

📥  Accommodation, Bars and eateries, Christmas, Opening hours, Security, Students

Well, the months keep on rolling by! Just where has 2015 gone?

Somehow we're coming to the end of November, and another busy month for ahs.

The Securi-Mo guys are still fundraising for Movember, taking donations online and in the library.

We're seeing Christmas decorations start to appear around campus. We've got them up in the bars and eateries and we're starting to notice a few in the students' windows too, which is always nice to see.

Christmas promotions

We're gearing up for the festive season with a whole range of Christmas offers, snacks, meals and events.

We're booking Christmas parties and lunches for guests, staff and students. We've got special edition, Christmas-themed hot drinks and a treats across our food outlets and we'll be serving up traditional Christmas lunches in lime tree, Fountain Canteen, Wessex Restaurant and Claverton Rooms over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile there will be a bit of a twist on the standard Christmas lunch in Parade Bar & Grill. Keep your eyes peeled for that one.

It all starts on Monday 30 November and these promotions will run for various periods throughout December.

The approach of the Christmas period also means some changes to the opening hours of our bars and eateries. More on that later.

House hunting

While everything on campus is looking very homely and comforting right now, it's also the time of year when students begin to make arrangements for their second year accommodation.

We ran a Housing Forum on Wednesday 18 November and we're running drop-in sessions in West Accommodation Centre until Wednesday 9 December for students to find out about what they need to do to secure housing for September 2016.

Studentpad will release the available homes for next year on 7 December, so these events can be a great help to students at a time when many of them will be looking for their first home in the big wide world.

Christmas opening hours

With Christmas just around the corner, and students due to leave campus and head to their families and friends for the festive period, our bars and eateries will operate reduced hours over the next few weeks.

Opening hours as usual unless otherwise stated.

New year, new arrivals

📥  Accommodation, Bars and eateries, Intake, Open Day, Students, Summer

The new academic year is here again and as always it's a time of great excitement and activity in the department and across the University.

We were busy with preparations for an open day on 12 September and the intake of new students over 19 and 20 of September.

On open day, we welcomed thousands of prospective students, as they explored our facilities and found out all about our courses, research, accommodation and other services. Despite the rain showers, we saw plenty of happy faces.

Hopefully we'll be seeing those smiles again next September as many of those visitors move in to their accommodation for the first time as they begin their University career with us, as was the case for thousands of new students on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2015.

To see the baton of independence being passed on to the next generation is a wonderful thing to witness, and it's something we're. as a department, particularly proud to be part of, providing the new homes for thousands of new students.

New look for outlets

We've also given some of our bars and eateries a facelift, with Parade Bar & Grill undergoing a total re-brand over the summer, featuring a brand-new menu full of delicious, high-quality, home-made burgers and bar food.

This year we've installed more IPTV screens around campus with the aim of improving student experience with digital menu screens and coverage of the Rugby World Cup in many of our food outlets (Sports Café, lime tree and Parade Bar & Grill).

Keep up to speed with dates and times of match coverage in our venues through our Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Helping students settle in

In the Quads, we're also showing informative, instructional videos which we hope the students will find useful and engaging and answer many common questions.

Those videos cover everything from living in University accommodation and how to use features in The Quads, to highlights of Freshers' Week and advice on what to do in their first few weeks of University.

The new academic year also means that our eateries are back to their usual business hours.
