Summer has arrived

It may have felt like the summer sun has taken a long time to arrive this year, but here in AHS we're well underway with our summer business.

We've been hosting conferences, summer schools and holiday makers for the last few weeks.

So far we've hosted organisations including the Samaritans, who were here for their three regions conference, the Research Methods Festival 2016, and this year's MEI conference.

Make sure you head over to our Conference and Events Twitter page to take a look at the kind of things our guests got up to at the conferences.

As for guest accommodation, we've already welcomed more than 40,000 visitors so far and we're looking forward to saying hello to those who are yet to stay with us.

With the change in business over the summer, it's not just conference delegates and bed and breakfast guests that we welcome to the University. We've also hired several new casual members of staff, and we're delighted they've joined the team.

Elsewhere in AHS, we've launched a new menu in Parade Bar and Grill. The venue will be closed between 1 August and 9 September while a new extraction system is fitted in the kitchen, so head over there in July to get your teeth into the new menu before the new academic year begins.

And with the new term in mind, student accommodation application have been received and are currently being worked through by our student Accommodation team as we move towards the arrival of our new student population in September. It's hard to believe that our new students will be here in just a few short weeks, when AHS will return to our student-focussed business.

In the meantime, we've got lots more guests to look after. Keep your eyes on the blog for more news and updated over the summer.

Springing into action

April has been a month of new things for AHS. We've got a new website, we've welcomed applications for accommodation from new students and we're planning exciting new things for our bars and eateries.

New website

You may have noticed that AHS webpages look a bit different this month. Launched on Wednesday 6 April, we were the first section to go live on the new website, just in time for students to apply for their accommodation for the September 2016 arrivals.

Digital Marketing and Communications have been working tirelessly for the last 18 months developing a new website and Content Management System for the University. Now it's here. It looks great, will scale with your mobile device, and make finding information easier for users.

The following sections are now live:

We're now working on the transition of Security, and that should be live in the very near future.

New arrivals

Applications for student accommodation opened at 9am on Tuesday 12 April and we can't wait to welcome this year's cohort to our accommodation in the city and on campus in September.

This year there's more accommodation available to students than ever, with four new properties in the city centre that are managed by CRM Students.

New look Wessex Restaurant

Over the next few weeks there will be some changes in Wessex Restaurant. Keep your eyes peeled for some great new developments coming to our fine dining restaurant in June.

And speaking of June...

Looking towards the summer

The students will be leaving us in the next few months as their first year of study comes to an end, but that doesn't mean things stop for AHS. That's just the start of one of our busiest periods in the year.

It isn't long until we begin welcoming thousands of bed and breakfast guests, backpackers, families, summer schools and conference delegates to our events venues and guest accommodation on campus and in the city.

We're recruiting more staff and will soon be launching our summer campaign. We look forward to meeting some see some new faces soon and welcoming them into the AHS team.

New year, new arrivals

The new academic year is here again and as always it's a time of great excitement and activity in the department and across the University.

We were busy with preparations for an open day on 12 September and the intake of new students over 19 and 20 of September.

On open day, we welcomed thousands of prospective students, as they explored our facilities and found out all about our courses, research, accommodation and other services. Despite the rain showers, we saw plenty of happy faces.

Hopefully we'll be seeing those smiles again next September as many of those visitors move in to their accommodation for the first time as they begin their University career with us, as was the case for thousands of new students on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2015.

To see the baton of independence being passed on to the next generation is a wonderful thing to witness, and it's something we're. as a department, particularly proud to be part of, providing the new homes for thousands of new students.

New look for outlets

We've also given some of our bars and eateries a facelift, with Parade Bar & Grill undergoing a total re-brand over the summer, featuring a brand-new menu full of delicious, high-quality, home-made burgers and bar food.

This year we've installed more IPTV screens around campus with the aim of improving student experience with digital menu screens and coverage of the Rugby World Cup in many of our food outlets (Sports Café, lime tree and Parade Bar & Grill).

Keep up to speed with dates and times of match coverage in our venues through our Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Helping students settle in

In the Quads, we're also showing informative, instructional videos which we hope the students will find useful and engaging and answer many common questions.

Those videos cover everything from living in University accommodation and how to use features in The Quads, to highlights of Freshers' Week and advice on what to do in their first few weeks of University.

You know what we did this summer

This summer, and every summer, AHS becomes a hive of activity.

As we wave goodbye to the students in June, we have almost 3000 empty rooms in the city and on campus.

Rather than waste that space, we change from a student service, to a commercial service, generating money for the University outside of the academic year. AHS effectively becomes Bath's biggest budget hotel and hostel accommodation each summer.

We go into overdrive, welcoming bed and breakfast guests, conferences and summer schools throughout the summer months.

Whether it's families on a weekend away, backpackers from abroad travelling in the UK or stag and hen parties in the city for a celebration, we open our doors to the world and enable them to explore and enjoy the city of Bath while staying in affordable accommodation.

This year we've launched an advertising and media campaign across the south west and developed social media accounts to help raise awareness and reach more potential customers with our products.

The students return in September, but that doesn't mean we're winding down for the rest of the summer.

Just last week we played host to the Modern Pentathlon European Championships, welcoming competitors, officials and fans alike to our campus and accommodation. The events all took place in the Sports Training Village with our friends over at Team Bath key to organising this incredible event.

This premier athletic event and logistical wonder took place on campus from Monday 17 August to Sunday 23 August. And that's not the only sporting presence that we'll have on campus this year.

The Rugby World Cup takes place in England this coming September and October, and the Australian Rugby Union team will be using the University of Bath as a training base throughout their campaign.

It's going to be very exciting to have such high-level competitors with us over the next few weeks and we're honoured to have them here, especially as Bath is such a rugby city. But it's not just sporting heavyweights that we've hosted this summer.

The University has welcomed many conference delegates over recent months, from industries and areas of study as diverse as Mathematics in Education and Industry to naval engineering symposiums and Chinese teaching in the Western world.

We've also been home to Open University students who have lived here on campus in our accommodation as they continue their studies.

Our accommodation on campus has housed hundreds of teenagers from all over Europe and further afield in the summer schools held on campus.

Each year overseas pupils attending courses run by Ardmore and Target come to the University of Bath to learn English. It's a great opportunity for young people to experience University life and another culture, and it's something we love doing.

We don't stop there though. All year round we're welcoming guests from all over the world to the beautiful city of Bath and to our wonderful University, and you'll be able to keep up to date with all the latest news and updates from us in AHS, right here.
