The Department of Biology & Biochemistry, consistently ranked in the top ten among all Biosciences departments in the UK, is renowned for its broad range of world-leading research on animals, plants and microorganisms. Research addresses fundamental biological questions at the molecular, cellular, organismal and population levels, with much of our work directly relevant to human health (including stem cells, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders and infectious disease), food security and sustainable chemical technology (e.g. biofuels). The outstanding quality of the research is reflected in the level of external funding from the UK Research Councils, medical charities, European Union and Industry as well as publications in the top international journals.
Our research is focused on four areas in which we have a leading international profile:
- Cell and Developmental Biology
- Evolution and Biodiversity
- Infection and Immunity
- Medical and Industrial Biotechnology
