New books in our Careers Library!

Posted in: Sector Insight, Tips & Hints

Did you know that we have a small reference library of carefully selected career books in the Careers Service? Come in and have a browse and a read, or find a list of what’s in stock in our on-line catalogue.

Newly purchased items are listed here and recent highlights include:

  • Alternative careers in science: leaving the ivory tower (pub 2005), by Cynthia Robbins-Roth

This book contains 22 case studies of scientists who have left the lab to pursue alternative careers in which they are using some of the skills or knowledge they developed while working in or studying science. The jobs they have gone on to do include technical and science writing, publishing, investment banking, corporate communications and executive search. This book was published in the US, so some information such as expected salaries and addresses of relevant professional bodies will not apply here, but the personal stories and the range of options open to scientists should provide some inspiration and ideas to explore.

  • Working in international development and humanitarian assistance: a career guide (pub 2015), by Maia Gedde
