Making Universities Sustainable – but only up to a point

Posted in: Comment, News and Updates

The Making Universities Sustainable conference in Denmark in October is, we’re told

“Relevant for all engaged in university sustainability, experienced as well as beginners … leading decision makers, sustainability coordinators, administrative staff or facilities managers.”

That’s because it’s about exploring “the most important issues in making your university sustainable.”

So, if you pitch up, you’ll be able to

“learn from best practice cases on key sustainability issues from laboratories and energy to management and green purchasing [and] share your own experiences with other professionals engaged in campus sustainability and get inspired by top researchers from around the globe.”

The blurb continues:

“Universities around the globe have a considerable environmental impact, and as producers of knowledge they also carry a unique responsibility to lead the way and show how sustainability can be integrated across teaching, research and operations.  Universities educate millions of students each year and their influential role should be utilized to provide awareness among students and others involved in the institution’s activities.”

Did you notice that “provide awareness”?  Such limited ambition.  It probably explains why none of the 10 key themes mention learning or teaching.  The themes are:

  • Sustainability organization
  • Management systems
  • Communicating sustainability
  • Green purchasing
  • Sustainable laboratories
  • Campus as a living lab
  • Certification schemes for buildings / campus
  • Energy savings / CO2 reductions
  • Staff and student involvement
  • Demonstrating leadership

You can sign up here  for news and updates.  But, really, why would you bother?
