Essential Christmas and New Year Update for EU and International Students

Dear EU and International Students,

The Christmas holidays are generally very quiet, and Christmas time can be lonely if you do not make plans. Make sure you join this Facebook Group of other students in Bath . Why not organise an event to meet up with others?

If you are in University Halls of Residence, please let your duty resident tutor know that you are staying over the Christmas period – particularly if you have had to change your plans and will be staying in Bath unexpectedly.

***Opening Hours Over Christmas
Christmas Closure:
On 25 December most shops in the UK will be closed.
There will also be a public holiday on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December so make sure that you are prepared and stock up on food- shops will be open but with limited opening hours,

Monday 3 January will also be a public holiday with many shops closed.

The Student Services Centre and the International Office
Open until 13:00 on 23rd December.
Make sure that you come and collect any essential documents before this date.
Extra drop-in session on Tuesday 4th January 10:00-13:00.

The Advice and Representation Centre
10:00-16:00 Monday 20 December but will close at Midday on 24 December.

 It will re-open on Tuesday 4 January.
The centre offers support to all students at the University of Bath.

Self Access Language Centre: Access to foreign language DVD’s, books and satellite TV .

The Chaplaincy
Open throughout the Christmas vacation, from 9.00am to 18:00 daily.
Please leave the place as you would like to find it! Comfy chairs, warmth and a Christmas tree are all there for you. If you would like to use the kettle and microwave- contact security. Chaplaincy staff will not be available to contact from 25 -28 December. Please turn out the lights when you leave.

22 December 2010The winter solstice is a Pagan festival called Yule, it is one of the traditional Celtic fire festivals and marks the return of the light after the longest night of the year. Many of the traditions associated with Christmas- such as gift giving and kissing under the green and white “mistletoe” berries come from this ancient festival. Christmas Eve 24 December Churches are open late at night with special services, often with candles and singing to welcome in Christmas day at midnight. http://www.bathabbey.org/

Christmas Day, 25 December Christmas Day is the celebration of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Christians believe that he is the son of God. British people tend to celebrate in their families. There are special church service open to all with singing and music. The celebrations are also marked by the presence of Father Christmas, also known as Santa Claus, bringing gifts for children.
Boxing Day, 26 December“Boxing Day” is celebrated after Christmas Day .Traditionally it was the day that marks giving Christmas gift “boxes” to servants who would have the day off. The shops are usually open longer hours on Boxing Day and so it is sometimes known as a shopping holiday with lots of sales. Opening hours are generally shorter because this is a public holiday

Please note that the new Post Study Work application form has now been issued.

The new form contains details of the biometric process.

We therefore strongly recommend that applications submitted from today onwards should be on the new form.
