Apology for interruption to IT services Tuesday 17 May 2016

Posted in: IT disruption

Yesterday, routine maintenance carried out by a specialist contractor on our uninterruptable power supply [UPS] caused a short break to the power feed of one of our data centres. Some equipment was reset and some damaged. We are waiting for a report from the contractor to better explain the reasons for this unexpected failure.

Some IT services, such as email, continued smoothly despite the significant outage and many, such as eduroam, were available after a short period of time. Others were more seriously affected by damaged equipment or a number of further complications, and were not available for several hours, including Moodle, iTrent and Agresso.

I apologise for the deficient IT service you received yesterday and any disruption this may have caused you.

We are moving to a new datacentre in 4ES in a few months, this has dual UPS systems which will significantly reduce the risk of failure during future maintenance.
