With the first day of the new semester yesterday, the e-Learning team received a small number of reports from users about the slowness of the service. As with similar reports previously, this was down to the number of users logging onto the application concurrently.

However, our internal monitoring of the Moodle servers shows that the recent performance tweaks that we have made, such as disabling certain filters, and optimising others, in Moodle [more information] have made a positive difference already, and that the service is performing better now than at the beginning of semester 1.

Further service performance-related work has been stated in the Moodle Development Plan for 2010, such as moving Moodle ‘log tables’ and some additional housekeeping related to removing users in the Moodle who are no longer at the university. The full plan can be found at: http://go.bath.ac.uk/moodledevplan2010.

We can assure users that the e-Learning team are working hard to continue providing a robust and resilient service for the university community, and are regularly liaising with our colleagues in the BUCS Network Team as part of this process.
