Colleagues may be aware of discussions regarding future Moodle-Turnitin integration at Bath and that we were hoping to be in a position to run a small number of selected pilots early in the 2010/11 academic year.

There are three competing Moodle-Turnitin integrations available for use at an institutional level, each of which enables student submissions to be easily checked for originality.  In choosing an appropriate integration method for Bath it was essential to consider not only the level of user functionality on offer, but the sustainability of the code and its ability to be forward compatible with later versions of Moodle.  With this in mind, we selected the method that will ultimately be part of the core code for Moodle 2 when it is released in a couple of months.

Whilst we consider this to be the right decision for Bath in the longer term, there appear to be some problems with the way it currently integrates with Moodle 1.9.9 (the version in use at Bath).  As this is the case, plans to integrate our installation of Moodle with Turnitin are regrettably on hold.

Obviously this is disappointing, but should there be any change to the status of the existing code we will reconsider the viability of running pilots during 2010/11, and of course we are keen to review the Moodle 2 integration at the earliest opportunity.

We will be reviewing the situation with the software provider over the summer with the hope to implement as soon as possible. Further updates will be made available via this blog as they become available.
