The web pages for Omnibus will be changed as a result of changes to the University website so this is the first post of our blog which we will use as a way of communicating with members. As it is the end of the year it would be appropriate to remind members what has taken place this year. Watch this space for new events.
REGULAR EVENTS
OMNIBUS CONVERSATIONS with Jack Whitehead, Life-time member of OMNIBUS, take place monthly or bi-monthly and focus on a topic of interest. Recently we have focused on Knowledge Transfer, Exchange, Exploitation and Creation and recent discussion has led us to discuss the University’s values at described on the website http://www.bath.ac.uk/about/values/index.html. OMNIBOULES is our Pentanque team. The new season will be starting soon. During the summer Omnibus have regular lunchtime practice sessions and compete in the local league. They reached third place in the local league in the 2011 season. Details of Omniboules can be found at this separate website http://people.bath.ac.uk/mbr20/boules/. THE STAFF BADMINTON CLUB is an active bi-weekly club for members of staff only. We play Mondays and Thursdays at 1230 in the STV and the Founders Hall respectively. Membership is via Omnibus and costs £7.50 a month (requires membership of Omnibus).
Mondays are currently played under the No Strings scheme, sponsored by Badminton England. This requires payment of 50p at STV reception every time you play. This arrangement will continue till the No Strings scheme is unavailable, after which we will return to Staff Badminton only bookings - possibly at an increased monthly fee of £15.
We are a very friendly club and are always seeking new members. We use plastic shuttles to keep costs down and the standard of play is "club" standard, which is somewhere between complete beginners and the university's third team! We primarily play doubles and have 2 courts booked for every session.

OMNIBUS QUIZZES - We have only had two quizzes this year but we had between 16 - 20 teams. A team of four with a fee of £5 per team plays in the Plug in the Student Centre. You bring your own lunch. There are prizes galore for the winners including a prize for best team name and a booby prize if you’re not so hot on your general knowledge.

CARDIFF CITY CENTRE SHOPPING/CULTURE OR RHS CARDIFF FLOWER SHOW Saturday 18th April 2015 was a chance to enjoy the annual flower show or take a trip to see the sights or shop in the City Centre.
STRAWBERRIES AND SPARKLING WINE, NO 16 LANSDOWN CRESCENT Wednesday 20th May 2015 Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell invited Omnibus members to join her and Omnibus Committee members to a unique evening at No.16 Lansdown Crescent. Fresh strawberries and cream were served, together with sparkling wine. Unfortunately it was a little chilly for the garden so we enjoyed the gracious second floor drawing room and the works of art within them.
THEATRE ROYAL BATH We have seen three performances Spamalot, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime and Handbagged benefiting from a 20% group discount.
BEAU STREET HOARD LECTURE 2nd June 2015 The Beau Street Hoard was excavated by archaeologists on the site of the new Gainsborough Hotel in Beau Street, Bath in 2007 and is one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries to have been made in Bath. The 17, 577 Roman coins span the period from 32BC – 274AD and were found in eight separate money bags, which were fused together. In March 2014 Bath & North East Somerset Council was awarded a grant of £372,500 from The Heritage Lottery Fund to purchase the hoard. An Archaeologist from the Roman Baths Museum came to talk to us and we were able to handle some coins.
BECKFORD TOWER, Thursday 25th June Another chance for new members to have a guided tour of Beckford Tower and Museum, located at the top of Lansdown Road. The Tower is an extraordinary building that stands today as the only surviving example of William Beckford's great architectural achievements.
ROMAN BATHS TUNNEL TOURS, 21st and 23rd July 2015 Repeated again this year it was a chance to find out more about the Roman, Georgian and Victorian history hidden in the Tunnels beneath the city of Bath.
BLENHEIM PALACE, OXFORDSHIRE August 2015 A chance to experience the grandeur of the principal residence of the dukes of Marlborough, and the only non-royal non-episcopal country house in England to hold the title of palace. The palace, one of England's largest houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1722.
THE BIG PIT NATIONAL COAL MUSEUM & NATIONAL ROMAN LEGION MUSEUM AT CAERLEON, Saturday 26th September 2015 This trip included an underground tour and the opportunity to explore life in a far-flung outpost of the mighty Roman Empire.
