Edutxt provide a very easy to follow guide which is available once you log in to your edutxt account. You are strongly advised to use this initially. However, if you do have questions then please email the email list (edutxtadmins@lists.bath.ac.uk). If you need to be added to the list then please email Geraldine Jones (g.m.jones@bath.ac.uk).

The following are an emerging list of FAQs being developed from the lists and from meetings.

Getting started

Q: What should I do when I log in first?

A: You need to set up your account (profile) with the appropriate details. To do this, log in. Then click on account, and click on Profile. You then need to complete the appropriate parts of the form and submit at the bottom.

Address Book

Q: Who can see my address book?

A: When you log in, the address book is your address book. Therefore, unless you set it up as being shared then only you can see the address book. If you wanted to share an address book between a number of people then contact Geraldine Jones who will discuss your needs further.

Q: How do I upload from my access database into my address book.

A:  You need to export your Access database into a csv format. The format  of the columns will depend on what you are trying to do. However, the minimum should be;

firstname, lastname, mobile number

Costs

Q: Who pays for the text to a person outside the UK?

A: All texts sent via EduTxt will be paid for from your departmental allocation. There is no cost to the end user for receiving a text if they are outside the UK.

Q: How can I get started using SMS?

A: The first step is to contact Geraldine Jones (g.m.jones@bath.ac.uk) to discuss your needs, and ideas. In terms of a costing model, the following is proposed.

When a Deptartment, Schools or individual want to use SMS they’ll need to purchase the texts and incoming number from BUCS (Contact: Fran Saunders). These can be purchased in various bundles, with the financial commitment being a minimum of around £250. This might include, one incoming number and a 1000 sms texts. You can then top up your required SMS when you like via BUCS. At the end of each year, BUCS will contact you to discuss future need, and the renewal of the incoming number (if appropriate). The method of payment will be discussed with David Mullings.

To help people get started before having to commit money the e-learning team (Contact: Geraldine Jones) will try to provide a number of texts and an incoming number (shared, using key words – academics UoB username). This will last until the end of the semester or the end of the texts which ever is sooner.
