Recognising technicians at the Staff Recognition Awards

Posted in: Awards, Recognition

Technical staff make up a relatively small proportion of the staff body at the University, but it speaks volumes about their contribution that we consistently see technicians recognised in University awards. I'm delighted to see that Simon Brown and Paul Griffiths were both winners of awards at the University Staff Recognition Awards this week. These annual awards recognise professional services and support staff who have shown excellence in their work and contributed to the broader life of the University.

Paul Griffiths receives his award from Ian WhitePaul Griffiths is a Senior Technician in Engineering & Design Technical Services and was winner of the Staff Recognition Award for Enhancing the Student Experience. His nomination stated:

"Paul has provided exceptional technical, pastoral and emotional support to the Bath Zero Electric Motorcycles student teams over the last three years. He is core to the teams' successes and has shown incredible dedication matched with superb technical skills. Paul voluntarily works long hours, including weekends, to support the teams. His positive attitude and his tenacity have been invaluable."

Laboratory Assistant in the Department of Chemistry, Simon Brown, was one of the winners of the Staff Recognition Award for Supporting Colleagues.

"Simon has gone above and beyond to support academic colleagues and students alike through his proactivity, forward planning, and ability to find solutions. Amongst other initiatives he has devised a welcome programme for new staff in the team which will shortly be rolled out across the faculty, and has striven to promote excellent health and safety practice in the department."

A number of technical staff were also highly commended:

Miles Chambers - Engineering & Design Technical Services

Brigite Nunes Simoes Rodrigues - Engineering & Design Technical Services

Isabel Wells Department of Physics

Finally, there was more success earlier in the month when the Biology & Biochemistry Technical Teaching Team were awarded the Faculty [of Science] Learning Support Award at a presentation on 6 June. Anna Mellors, Sandra Catalan, Janelle Dela Isla, Karen Rayford, David Rodrigues and Chris Vennard were commended for their dedication to enhancing the student experience despite a number of challenges this year.

"The Team are unflinching in their support of the teaching in the department... Nothing is ever too much trouble for the team."

Congratulations to all mentioned and the many other technical staff also nominated for awards!
