It’s been a while since my last update, but there has been lots happening. Here’s a very brief summary of a few things of note.
Technicians’ Conference
There was a great turn-out at the conference in June, with around 120 people in attendance. It was encouraging to see quite a few ‘non-technical’ staff come along to show their support, including several heads of department. There was a brilliant display of posters and it was fascinating to see the wide range of work technical staff are involved in.
Professor Jonathan Knight opened the afternoon stating his support for technical staff and the importance of the role we play in the work of the University. Our guest speaker Kelly Vere then spoke about the positive impact the Technician Commitment has made already in the last couple of years, and emphasised the importance of technician ownership and engagement to make it a success at Bath. We were then treated to a mix of talks from our own technicians: Simon Brown, Neil Price and even a rap from Lesley Chapman!
We finished the afternoon with a summary of the work so far on the Technician Commitment, and the feedback from attendees following this is being looked through and will form a key part of the action plan we are now putting together.
Technician Commitment Steering Group
Over the summer we had the first meeting of the steering group that will be overseeing the Technician Commitment at Bath. Our first target is the completion of our self-assessment and action plan, which is due for submission in December. The steering group is: David Williams, Chris Carey, Marianne Harkins, Daniel Lou-Hing, Jack Howell, Daniel Ball, Amanda Jones, Sarah Hunter, David Rodrigues, Anneke Lubben, Aiste Senulyte, Ed Webster and Prof Jonathan Knight.
Autumn Lab Tours
Following your feedback from the conference, we have set up a series of lab tours throughout the coming months to give you the opportunity to see areas of the University you may not normally see, and meet technical staff from other departments. Please contact Jack Howell for more details.
- 14 August 2-3pm – Biomechanics and Physiology
- 18 September 2-3pm – Chemical Engineering
- 16 October 2-3pm – Mechanical Engineering
- 20 November 2-3pm – VSimulators facility (Architecture & Civil Engineering)

In addition, tours of the animal house in will run on multiple dates but with a smaller group size of 5 people. These can be booked directly with Martin Bradshaw.
