This summer the £7.5 billion modernisation of the Great Western Main Line reaches the historic city of Bath when Network Rail will be carrying out major engineering projects in Box Tunnel and along the line to the east of Bath.

Significant sections of the railway track will be lowered to allow the installation of the overhead lines that will provide the power to the new Super Express Trains. The work will be carried out in two phases the first of which starts on Saturday 18 July, and the second on Saturday 1 August with both due for completion on Monday 31 August. These major works will mean that there will be changes to services that travel through Bath Spa.

To sum up:

  • between 18 to 31 July: There will be a reduction in services between Bath and Chippenham and journeys via Melksham.
  • between 1 August to 31 August: The railway between Chippenham and Bath and Trowbridge to Bath will be closed.

Further details on exactly how this will affect your commute, and what actions are being taken, can be found here.

Cyclists using the railway lines can find information here.
