Publication: What are the characteristics of Transdisciplinary Engineering research?

Posted in: Uncategorised

Although interest in transdisciplinary (TD) research is increasing there is a perception that it has received less attention within engineering. This is important if, as generally accepted, adopting a TD approach increase the societal value of research.

Our latest paper, published in the International Journal of Agile Systems and Management, benchmarks TD engineering research against the broader TD literature addressing the question: How do the characteristics of the academic engineering TD literature compare to the TD academic literature in general?

We find that TD research is limited generally, and within engineering specifically. Historically, TD research has had a strong focused on sustainability challenges. Within engineering research, the focus has been wider addressing operational and ‘grand challenge’ problems.
