No significant results, your project is ruined. If you did an a\u00a0priori sample-sizing calculation, then\u00a0compare your predicted effect size to the one\u00a0you\u00a0observed\u00a0in your sample.\u202f\u00a0If you\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0do a power calculation, you can\u00a0now work backwards to calculate the minimum\u00a0effect size that could have been detected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is so great about 0.05 anyway?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is slightly controversial, as many disciplines still love the black-and-white cut-off of \u03b1 = 0.05; however, there is a growing trend towards more nuanced interpretations. In the first instance, it\u2019s worth considering how far off you are: hands up if you can't really see why p = 0.049 is\u00a0meaningfully different from p = 0.051\u00a0(spoiler, it isn't), noise in the data or error in the model is likely to dwarf any meaningful difference between those two numbers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rather than still sounding like someone who wishes they were below 0.05 (avoid saying \u201calmost significant\u201d),\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0better to report confidence intervals alongside your p-values, giving you scope for discussion. In many situations, the effect size is more interesting than the p-value anyway.\u00a0\u00a0Depending on your subject area, you might look to clinical or practical significance, rather than just statistical significance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">None of this means p-values are useless, but they are rarely the whole story, so give yourself the opportunity to widen the discussion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is not a drill (or,\u00a0maybe it\u00a0is)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most researchers like to have some solid evidence before doing a formal hypothesis test, but\u00a0undergrads\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0usually have the time or the money for a pilot study. That\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0automatically mean inferential stats are off the table, but it does mean a fully confirmatory analysis might not be the most sensible choice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Exploratory analysis tends to be wider in scope than inferential testing and can be a good\u00a0option\u00a0when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not sure what effect size to expect or when your sample is small. Some supervisors are more intimidating than others, but they always have the best interests of your project in mind.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh no!
