Dr Eleanor Parker, Planning and Projects Manager (Skills) in the Skills Centre<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW135124832 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW135124832 BCX0\">, looks at how you can get the most out of online learning.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last semester, we listened to our students with disabilities as they talked to Student Support and the Students\u2019 Union about barriers they were facing in the online learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>They reflected\u00a0on\u00a0what\u00a0worked\u00a0well\u00a0(individual note-takers for Live Online Interactive Learning (LOIL) sessions and personalised support from academic staff\u00a0were cited as especially useful)\u00a0and identified what staff could do to better support them. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/professional-services\/centre-for-learning-teaching\/\">Centre for Learning and Teaching<\/a>\u00a0are writing\u00a0a resource\u00a0for\u00a0staff\u00a0so they can\u00a0make your online experience the best it can be.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog,\u00a0to help you develop your skills\u00a0in studying online,\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0look at strategies\u00a0the\u00a0students\u00a0we spoke to\u00a0identified as helpful. We\u2019ll end with sources of support to develop your skills further.<\/p>\n<p>Each\u00a0experience is individual, but we\u2019ve thought about the patterns in what\u00a0students\u00a0experienced to come up with\u00a0the following top tips.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Top tip 1:<\/b>\u00a0<strong>Take time to ensure\u00a0<\/strong><strong>your\u00a0own learning environment is conducive to maximising access to live online sessions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Allow yourself some time before each session to review any notes on Moodle that explain what the session is about\u00a0or complete\u00a0tasks, test your\u00a0Internet\u00a0connection and join the platform (Zoom or Microsoft\u00a0Teams).<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re feeling\u00a0anxious about a live online session or working on an independent learning task online, you might find engaging in a wellbeing activity beforehand helpful. You\u2019ll know what works for you, but you could try a\u00a0section from a\u00a0book\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/campaigns\/read-well\/\">Read Well<\/a>\u00a0list, using a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bath.topdesk.net\/tas\/public\/ssp\/content\/detail\/knowledgeitem?unid=a027c446-c245-4c8b-85ba-ff7fd26c5377\">wellbeing app<\/a>\u00a0or joining a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/2020\/10\/19\/free-virtual-wellbeing-fitness-classes\/\">free\u00a0online\u00a0wellbeing and fitness class.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you need a place to\u00a0concentrate, you can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unibathlibrary.wordpress.com\/2020\/10\/19\/you-can-now-book-study-spaces-for-more-than-8-hours-per-week\/\">book a study space on campus<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If more support is needed\u00a0to help you better engage with live online sessions,\u00a0consider talking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/professional-services\/disability-service\/\">Disability Service<\/a>. Practical support such as mentoring may be\u00a0available\u00a0to address anxieties\u00a0with online activities\u00a0and practical ways to improve your study environment.\u00a0Disability Advisers\u00a0can\u00a0also\u00a0help\u00a0to\u00a0arrange the loan of\u00a0equipment\/software\u00a0or\u00a0help you to apply\u00a0for funding for equipment\/software to help you access your studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teaching staff\u00a0should help you\u00a0understand the \u2018ground rules\u2019 for live online sessions and give you a variety of ways to participate,\u00a0e.g.\u00a0hands up, chat functions, sharing ideas on an online space before, during or after the session\u00a0or maybe\u00a0even\u00a0the option to message them direct.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Top tip<\/b><b>\u00a02<\/b><b>:<\/b>\u00a0<strong>Experiment with these different options\u00a0and\u00a0reflect on\u00a0how\u00a0you feel most comfortable\u00a0engaging. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If these \u2018ground rules\u2019\u00a0aren\u2019t clear\u00a0or they don\u2019t give you\u00a0what\u00a0you need, feed that back to\u00a0teaching staff, either yourself or through your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesubath.com\/academicreps\/student\/findarep\/\">Academic\u00a0Representative<\/a>.\u00a0One of the students we spoke to from Health advised you ask for clarity\u00a0whenever you need it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018<i>I<\/i><i>f you don\u2019t understand something or think you missed out on important information<\/i><i>,<\/i><i>\u00a0always email your lecturers for more clarification. Don\u2019t be afraid to do so<\/i>.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Top tip<\/b><b>\u00a03<\/b><b>:\u00a0<\/b><strong>Think about ways\u00a0you can help\u00a0other students understand the \u2018ground rules\u2019 of how you will work together online. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Centre for Learning and Teaching has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/teachinghub.bath.ac.uk\/the-bath-blend\/essentials\/top-ten-tips-online-etiquette\/\">ten\u00a0top\u00a0tips for online etiquette<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0may\u00a0be helpful for you and fellow group members. Our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/academic-skills\/2020\/10\/30\/writing-a-ground-rules-agreement-for-group-work\/\">blog on writing a ground rules agreement<\/a>\u00a0might also give you some useful pointers.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Top tip 4:<\/b>\u00a0<strong>Take advantage of free online tools that are available to support your productivity in working online.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u00a0have a disability, injury or other medical condition, there may be other types of\u00a0specialist\u00a0support available.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of our favourites\u00a0available to all\u00a0students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/go.bath.ac.uk\/assistive-technology-student\">Student Self-Service Portal<\/a>:\u00a0access articles about various tools and features which can help with your productivity and access support from the Assistive Technology Team.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/publications\/how-to-make-your-work-accessible\/attachments\/accessibility-guide.pdf\">Creating Accessible Documents<\/a>:\u00a0Make sure the work you create is accessible to all people, especially those with disabilities.
