There\u2019s a lot more to Germany than beer and sausages! If you\u2019re interested in learning German or working in Germany in the future, here are five useful facts I\u2019ve picked up from the Skills Centre\u2019s Advanced German course. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

German is one of eight languages that students can learn through the Skills Centre<\/a>. Dr Uwe Baumann runs the German courses at various levels, from Beginners to Advanced.<\/p>\n

Why learn German?<\/h2>\n

There might be lots of reasons why you want to learn or improve your German. Germany is the largest economy in Europe and one of the most competitive in the world, so maybe you\u2019d like to go on a placement or work there in the future?<\/p>\n

On the Advanced course, we explore a different topic each week and learn from Uwe\u2019s wide-ranging knowledge of German culture and society.<\/p>\n

Here are some random facts I\u2019ve learnt from the course to give you a little insight into the country and the language.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 German is spoken all over the world<\/h2>\n

German is an official language in six countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Belgium) and there are over 7.5 million people in no less than 42 countries who belong to a German-speaking minority, including France, Netherlands, Italy, and Spain.<\/p>\n

There are also large German-speaking communities in Russia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Namibia (a former German colony), USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. In total, around 130 million people speak German as their first language or second language across the world. So you might use your German skills in some unexpected places!<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Colourful coalitions are the norm<\/h2>\n

Coalition governments made up of several political parties are the norm in the German parliament, the Bundestag<\/em>. Coalitions have different nicknames, based on the traditional colours of each party.<\/p>\n

For example, a \u2018Jamaika-B<\/em>\u00fc<\/em>ndnis<\/em>\u2019 (Jamaica coalition), which has governed since 2017 in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, is formed of the conservative Christian Democratic CDU\/CSU party (black), Die Gr<\/em>\u00fc<\/em>nen<\/em> green party and the liberal FDP party (yellow) \u2013 all the colours of the Jamaican flag.<\/p>\n

Olaf Scholz, the newly-elected German Chancellor, will lead an \u2018Ampel-Koalition<\/em>\u2019, or traffic light coalition, made up of his centre-left SPD (red), the FDP (yellow) and Die Gr<\/em>\u00fc<\/em>nen<\/em> (green) parties \u2013 the colours of a traffic light.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We influence each others\u2019 languages<\/h2>\n

You may already be familiar with the German words Schadenfreude<\/em>, Zeitgeist<\/em>, Wanderlust, <\/em>and Doppelg<\/em>\u00e4<\/em>nger <\/em>which we\u2019ve borrowed because an English equivalent doesn\u2019t exist?<\/p>\n

A huge number of English words are also used in everyday German. \u2018Der<\/em> Lockdown\u2019 <\/em>and \u2018das<\/em> Homeschooling\u2019<\/em> are two recent examples from the pandemic, and technology vocabulary is full of anglicisms (der Laptop<\/em>, der Browser<\/em>, das Blog<\/em>, die E-Mail<\/em>, die Social Media<\/em>\u2026)<\/p>\n

Watch out for false friends though. \u2018Das Handy\u2019<\/em> in German is a \u2018mobile phone\u2019 in English, \u2018der Smoking<\/em>\u2019 in German is actually a \u2018dinner jacket\u2019 in English and, most paradoxically of all, \u2018das Gift\u2019<\/em> in German is \u2018poison\u2019 in English (lots more examples here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Germans are very social!<\/h2>\n

Clubs and societies, or \u2018Vereine\u2019<\/em>, are an important part of German society. There are around 50 million members of 620,000 registered societies for every conceivable activity and hobby. Every third German is a member of a sports society.<\/p>\n

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the biggest society in Germany is the ADAC \u2013 the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club eV<\/em> (German Association of Car Owners) with 20 million members. Some weirder societies include the Linksh<\/em>\u00e4nder-Verein<\/em> (Left Handers Society), Belle Moustache eV<\/em> (Club for Beautiful Facial Hair), and how about joining the Furz-dich-frei Verein<\/em> (Club for Free Farters)?!<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Willkommen in Deutschland<\/h2>\n

The current population of Germany is 83.2 million. Roughly 26%, over 21 million people, are from a migrant background, making it, after the US, the country with the second highest number of migrants in the world<\/a> (and the figure is expected to rise to 35% by 2040<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The biggest migrant group (13%) originates from Turkey, dating back to the Turkish 'Gastarbeiter'<\/em> (guest workers) who arrived in the 1960s.<\/p>\n

In 2015 Germany took in an unprecedented one million refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, over half of whom have since found work.<\/p>\n

Whilst the integration of migrants into German society is not without its challenges, their contribution to the German labour market is much needed, given the country\u2019s ageing population and one of the lowest birth rates in the world.<\/p>\n
