But taking care of yourself is just as important as acing those tests.

Psychology student Riya shares 5 ways to take care of yourself by staying grounded, healthy, and motivated during exam season...

Prioritize Sleep!

Perhaps one of the most important things even outside of exam season. I know now tempting it is to pull all-nighters to revise one last time before bed, but sleep is so underrated during these times! Getting enough sleep is crucial for memory consolidation and focus. Aim for 7-8 hours a night- you’ll perform better rested than running on empty. So, get your well-deserved rest!

Fuel Your Brain

Cooking and planning out all your meals during assessments can be tricky and tedious, but make sure to eat well! Opting for ‘brain-boosting’ snacks like nuts, fruits, and dark chocolate are great ways to stay energised while studying. And stay hydrated— water keeps your mind sharp and energy steady.

Schedule Breaks

I’m sure most of us have heard of study strategies like the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes work, 5 minutes rest). While this may not work for everyone, taking short breaks to leave your study area is crucial. Taking short walks around the city/campus, for instance, can help prevent tunnel-vision and burnout. Use these breaks to stretch a little and do something you enjoy.

Stay Active

Kind of related to the previous point, but even 15 minutes of exercise can reduce stress and improve focus. A quick workout or any active exercise of your choice can work wonders.

Lean on Support

Talking to your friends, family or course mates is always a great way to take your mind off the stress and lighten the load. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed in the midst of exams, and it’s easy to forget how you are not alone in this situation. Talking to services like Bath Student Support is always an option to receive more guidance during these busy times.

Self-care can sometimes seem irrelevant when preparing for exams but remember- it’s a strategy for success. In the end exams, though important, don’t define you. Balance hard work with looking after yourself, and you’ll emerge stronger and more prepared for whatever comes next. Good luck!

Exam season can feel like a whirlwind of deadlines, late-night study sessions, and caffeine-fuelled cramming.
