Using a database of violations against women, we explore how silencing functions across different structural levels, stemming from societal norms as well as business behaviours that impact women in the workplace. We take an exploratory approach, with a focus on violations in developing countries and learn, through these cases, more about how silencing emerges and is maintained in these settings. We also find evidence that reliance on global firms to themselves evaluate and audit human rights impacts may be prone to misuse. Our analysis shows how protections designed to support human rights in the workplace can actually prevent human rights victims from being heard. " width="724" height="1024" srcset="https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Annie-Snelson-Powell-724x1024.jpg 724w, https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Annie-Snelson-Powell-212x300.jpg 212w, https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Annie-Snelson-Powell-768x1086.jpg 768w, https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Annie-Snelson-Powell-1086x1536.jpg 1086w, https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Annie-Snelson-Powell-152x215.jpg 152w, https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Annie-Snelson-Powell.jpg 1414w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px" />

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-1224 size-large" src="https://blogs.bath.ac.uk/business-and-society/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2026/03/Deborah-Brewis-724x1024.jpg" alt="Navigating the Labour Market: Women Job Seekers’ Mobilisation of a Postfeminist Sensibility Dr Deborah Brewis Job seeking is a crucial yet overlooked process through which people navigate the world of work.
