While we\u2019re still in lockdown, with the vaccine rollout continuing and a roadmap announced \u2013 there is much to be positive about. So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0what does this mean for graduate jobs?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is happening right now<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are substantially fewer vacancies than there were last year.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Vacancy rates are running at about 65-80% of normal.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0However<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0comparing this quarter (November 2020 to January 2021) to the previous quarter, we are seeing an increase in vacancies.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The labour market<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is slowly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0improving but not back to where they were before the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most businesses are not confident that we will see a marked improvement\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">before late Spring.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The latest lockdown\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0impact<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on vacancies but not as dramatically as at the start of the pandemic. The sectors and job opportunities that have been most affected by the pandemic have remained consistent since the first lockdown.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the lockdown, things are looking up.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, CIPD reported that 56% of employers are looking to recruit at the start of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sectors like healthcare, finance and insurance, education and information and communication are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">continuing to hire\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as they have seen increase in demand or have been able to switch to remote working.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The biggest improvements in job\u00a0postings\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0most\u00a0recently\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have been in construction, loading\/stocking, manufacturing, logistic support and security and public safety.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The impact on job opportunities is not consistent across the country. London has been the hardest hit of all regions \u2013 this is a trend seen across capital cities around the world.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0there\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0recent\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0shows that the capital may be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recovering<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and London is expected to come back strongly.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Job postings are down most in the South East<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0while t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he North East is closest to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pre-pandemic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">figures<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does this mean for your job search?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you find that there are few positions available in your preferred career pathway, or location make sure to be flexible in your career planning. How or where else can you use the skills that you have acquired from your degree, work or voluntary experiences these last few years? In addition, are you widening your horizons about what jobs and sectors are available to you with your degree? As we\u2019ll see in the next section, some level of remote working is likely here to stay which may mean you can consider a wider location range as you may not need to commute\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">every day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Remote working is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n\u2019t going away<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Currently 37% of the workforce is working from home. However, if you break that down into sector then almost all of sectors like IT and professional and technical services are at home.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is a strong consensus that it is here to stay with many businesses now thinking about permanent changes to working patterns. Companies are planning to reduce office spaces by 30% on average. There is also appetite from the workforce for this too, with many workers reporting they would not want to go back to the office full-time.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This change to virtual working means that some skills will take on a new value to employers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Skills such as remote collaboration,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">management<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">online\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communication<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0understanding of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how virtual communication platforms work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0will be vital.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Depending on how the roadmap pans out, you may end up starting a job virtually full-time or when things return to normal, you might not be working at your workplace five days a week. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whether you are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">currently studying<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or on placement,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you have probably\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acquired\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some of the skills that will be needed for this new environment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Start thinking about how you<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can give evidence of them in applications and interviews.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Employer's attitudes to virtual working might also be something you want to research. You should be aware that this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">year may not follow the normal recruitment timeline<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you haven\u2019t found a position for after university yet, don\u2019t panic!
