Yet students and graduates with dyslexia often worry about informing potential employers of their condition. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/targetjobs.co.uk\/careers-advice\/career-planning\/412894-getting-a-graduate-job-when-you-have-dyslexia\">TargetJobs<\/a>, \u00a0you are not obliged to disclose dyslexia, especially if you feel it won\u2019t affect your ability to do the job. \u2018Disclosure is a personal choice and you have to decide what feels right for you.\u2019 The equal opportunities section of application forms usually asks about \u2018a long-term condition that affects you on a day-to-day basis\u2019. If you\u2019re applying for a job where your dyslexia won\u2019t affect your ability to do the tasks every day, you might not feel that it is relevant.<\/p>\n<p>I came across a really good blog post on Graduate Fog: Dyslexic Graduates: <a href=\"http:\/\/graduatefog.co.uk\/2014\/3684\/dyslexic-graduates-6-job-hunting-tips-advice-application\/\">6 job hunting tips you need to know about<\/a>. \u00a0The writer acknowledges that <em>\u201cBeing a dyslexic graduate can make a tough job market feel even tougher. Graduate applications, CVs, covering letters, assessment days and interviews are all more stressful if words swim on the page in front of you and reading, writing and spelling aren\u2019t your strong suit.<\/em>\u201d But adds that <em>\u201cin some cases, having dyslexia can actually be an asset when job hunting \u2013 if you handle the situation correctly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The author then gives lots of useful advice on playing to your strengths in the job hunting\u00a0process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be proud:\u00a0<\/strong>Use experiences of managing dyslexia to demonstrate persistence<\/li>\n<li><strong>Help yourself:\u00a0<\/strong>Keep exploring tools that can help you, talk to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/students\/services\/centre\/disability-service\/\"> Disability Advice Team at Bath<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Present your disability\u00a0as a positive:\u00a0<\/strong>Don\u2019t apologise, talk about your dyslexia with confidence<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know your rights: <\/strong>check out this super guide which has been produced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equalityhumanrights.com\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/documents\/Old_Guidance\/PDFS\/Workers\/1_employees_applying_for_a_job.pdf\">Equality &amp; Human Rights Commission.<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Play to your strengths:\u00a0<\/strong>For example\u00a0lots of dyslexics are creative, visual thinkers which\u00a0are invaluable skills in the workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scott Bryan <a href=\"http:\/\/careers.theguardian.com\/careers-blog\/jobseekers-dyslexia-challenges-solutions\">shares<\/a> his personal experience of job hunting with dyslexia and offers some helpful solutions.\u00a0You may also want to explore the advice and support available through the following organisations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adult-dyslexia.org\/\">Adult Dyslexia Association<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdadyslexia.org.uk\/\">British Dyslexia Association<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dyslexiaaction.org.uk\/\">Dyslexia Action<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the NHS, approximately 10% of the British population has dyslexia to some extent, making it one of the most common learning difficulties.
