Participants got the opportunity to meet with mentors from various engineering fields and showcase their pitching skills in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eibc.org.uk\/competition\/bath-beyond-boundaries-2024\/?utm_source=linkedin&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign&amp;utm_content=ap_kl9oc0mrgy\">Bath Beyond Boundaries: The Engineering Challenge.<\/a> This allowed students to engage their creativity, plan and present in teams a business idea to win a prize of \u00a31,000 for first place!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Hearing success stories and receiving mentoring has demystified the journey          for me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Renna\u2019s story<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renna entered the programme with a <em>\u2018conventional career path in mind \u2013 graduate, join a graduate scheme, work my way up\u2019<\/em>. By taking part in this course, she was able to develop her entrepreneurial skills with workshops like \u2018Product in a Box\u2019, creating and packaging her own product idea in a unique way. She was also able to develop here leadership skills, by exposure to the \u2018subtle manifestations of discrimination\u2019.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With her mentor\u2019s advice, she was able to secure a summer placement in a small company focusing on refurbishing buildings, a field she thought was a distant dream. In Renna\u2019s words<em>, \u2018this course has shattered the confines of my perceived career path'<\/em>. Exploring opportunities in your field not only builds a portfolio of skills and experience but can also shape the direction of your Career. Exposure to professionals and hands-on experience in different career disciplines can send you on a journey that you might have thought was not possible, as it did for Renna.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\"><em>I am grateful for the transformative experience that has set me on a trajectory I once deemed unattainable.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employable Skills<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doing this programme has given Renna and other students an opportunity to develop a variety of practical skills such as:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Engineering Design<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Research and Development<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Business Planning<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, on top of these, they were also able to develop and explore a range of transferable skills. These skills don\u2019t just apply to Entrepreneurial Careers, but also careers in Engineering and beyond:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Communication \u2013 <\/strong>Improved public speaking skills through presentations.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Inclusivity and Leadership \u2013 <\/strong>The programme was created to give students from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to succeed and lead various projects with inclusivity in mind<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Networking<\/strong> \u2013 Built a network of Peers and industry professionals from various Careers<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"><strong>Confidence <\/strong>\u2013 Encouraged creativity and forming ideas independently and in a team.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I put this on a CV<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to understand the job and the company you are applying for. <a href=\"https:\/\/unihub.bath.ac.uk\/students\/infopages\/detail\/99\">Tailoring your CV <\/a>is important especially when the experience might not be relevant directly. By highlighting the transferable skills that are relevant to a specific employer, you are more likely to stand out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a how I would write part of a CV written about the programme that is tailored towards a role in focusing on innovation and connecting and selling proposals with clients from various professional backgrounds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a><strong>University of Bath Diversity Impact Programme Participant<\/strong><br><em>2023 - 2024<\/em><\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Presented an entrepreneurial pitch about a carbon-negative domestic water filter in front of 30 engineers and won for my concise demonstration of a business plan<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Delegated tasks to envisage and develop a product that can be marketed, displaying my ingenuity and allowing me to build experience in diverse leadership<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Connected with mentors in fast paced networking event with 15 minute time frames, allowing me to build professional connections within an intense environment   <\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Diversity Impact Programme supported 26 students from underrepresented backgrounds in building entrepreneurial skills and confidence.
