Hi! I'm Ben Shingler<\/a>, a third-year Business student, and I'm excited to share that I've recently secured a competitive placement with a management consultancy for Semester 2. Looking back, I can trace a direct line from my Bath Insights internship to landing this role. It all revolved around one strategic decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

The power of strategic planning<\/h3>\n

When I was searching for an internship for the summer, I wasn't just looking for any opportunity, I had a specific goal in mind. I wanted to learn Power BI and apply it in a real world setting. Data visualisation and business intelligence are increasingly sought-after skills in consulting and other professional industries, and I knew that practical experience would set me apart from other candidates.<\/p>\n

That's why I applied to intern with\u00a0Library Research Services. While it might not have been the most obvious choice for a business student, it was the perfect environment for what I needed, which was a meaningful Power BI project that I could own from start to finish.<\/p>\n

Building skills through real projects<\/h3>\n

The Power BI project was the main focus of my internship. I was responsible for scoping the project, managing timelines, analysing data, and delivering insights that the team could actually use. What started as a technical learning experience became a crash course in project management, stakeholder communication, and self-driven problem solving.<\/p>\n

When my final interview for the placement came around, Power BI naturally became a talking point. Here's what I learned: interviewers want to know how you applied your technical skills, not just that you have them.<\/p>\n

    These are all key consulting skills. The internship gave me concrete examples that brought my CV to life.<\/p>\n

    1. Be strategic about your internship choices<\/h4>\n

    Don't just chase big brand names. Think about what specific skills you want to develop and find opportunities that will give you hands on experience with them. Sometimes a smaller organisation or less obvious sector can offer exactly what you need.<\/p>\n

    2. Own your projects<\/h4>\n

    When you're given a project, treat it like it's your business. Go beyond what's asked of you. The more ownership you take, the better your stories will be when you're sitting in an interview room months later.<\/p>\n

    3. Connect the dots in interviews<\/h4>\n

    Technical skills are valuable. Being able to articulate how you've used them in context is what really impresses employers. Practice turning your internship experiences into narratives that demonstrate broader skills like project management, analytical thinking, and self-motivation.<\/p>\n

    Looking ahead<\/h3>\n

    As I prepare to start my placement in Semester 2, I'm grateful for the decision I made to apply for Bath Insights. That focused Power BI project taught me a valuable skill. It also gave me the evidence I needed to prove I could deliver results in a professional setting.<\/p>\n
