I wanted to share my experience of taking part in the Bath Insights Internship Programme, and how it played a key role in helping me secure a 12-month industrial placement with UBS GOTO Technology, starting in June 2026.

By the end of first year, many students interested in technology or banking are already securing spring weeks and summer internships. For me, that traditional route was not accessible.

I applied to the Bath Insights Internship Programme in January and was offered the role before the Easter break, at a point when I was still exploring possible career paths. It was during the Easter break that I realised I wanted to pursue a career in technology, by which time many of the key application windows for spring weeks and summer internships had already closed.

Coming from the countryside and studying physics, I had not followed the typical early pipeline into tech or finance. Rather than seeing this as a setback, I decided to use the Bath Insights opportunity to my advantage - expanding both my hard and soft skills and aligning the experience towards the skills and competencies valued in technology roles when it came to applying for placements. That decision turned Bath Insights into one of the most impactful choices I have made at university.

Making the most of a long summer

With a four-month summer break ahead, I wanted to do something that would genuinely strengthen my CV, help me meet new people, and give me insight into life beyond lectures and exams. The eight-week Bath Insights internship provided exactly that.

As well as structured, paid work experience, the internship allowed me to experience Bath in the summer, build strong friendships with other interns, and see the University from a completely new perspective - this time as part of the staff of a large, multifaceted institution.

Getting a behind-the-scenes view of how a university operate, from departmental communications to longer-term planning, gave me a much broader understanding of how complex organisations function day to day, and how different teams contribute to shared goals.

My Bath Insights experience

I completed my internship with the Department of Psychology, working across a wide range of projects that gave me real responsibility and a genuine sense of contribution.

Some highlights included:
Supporting the department’s social media presence, significantly increasing engagement across both Instagram and LinkedIn through the creation of inclusive and accessible digital content. This involved developing creative skills using Canva for content creation, video editing and design, as well as attending training sessions on producing high-quality content using just a phone. I developed a comprehensive Canva guide, now used within the department, to support academic staff in creating posters, infographics and social media content using consistent branding

Training in Typecase, the University’s web-editing software, to ensure staff information was kept up to date and that website changes could be made independently when requested, supporting timely updates and improved accessibility across departmental webpages

Leading a substantial Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) project during the second half of the internship. This involved designing and analysing surveys, collating EDI initiatives across the department, running meetings, and speaking directly with staff and student groups. Using my student perspective was particularly valuable in identifying opportunities for collaboration between initiatives and groups that had not previously been connected

Presenting findings to senior departmental committees, with resources from the project adopted to support ongoing EDI work beyond the internship itself

Supporting early planning for the department’s 30th anniversary celebrations, helping to coordinate contacts and ideas for upcoming events

Alongside these projects, I built strong working relationships within the department, supported a University Open Day, and attended thought-provoking talks, including a particularly impactful session by Professor Phil Scraton titled “Bearing witness to the ‘pain of others’”.

Learning beyond the desk

Some of the most valuable learning took place outside traditional desk-based tasks. As part of Bath Insights, I took part in an HSS Faculty Volunteering Away Day at Prior Park, working alongside staff to support conservation efforts. It was physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, reinforcing the importance of teamwork, communication, and resilience.

Weekly intern lunches were another unexpected highlight, creating a strong sense of community and giving me the opportunity to connect with students from across the University, share experiences, and learn from different perspectives.

Standing out - and securing my UBS offer

Although my internship was not directly technical, it developed exactly the transferable skills employers look for: creativity, teamwork, communication, adaptability, and confidence in a professional environment.

This became particularly clear when interviewing for my 12-month industrial placement with UBS GOTO Technology, starting in June 2026. I knew my route into technology looked different from many other applicants, but rather than being a disadvantage, my Bath Insights experience became one of the strongest parts of my application.

It gave me concrete examples of responsibility, initiative, and real-world impact, and it played a direct role in securing the placement. Being able to talk about working behind the scenes within a university department, managing multiple stakeholders, and delivering outcomes that continued beyond the internship helped me stand out. These opportunities from Bath Insights undoubtedly helped me secure the role at UBS, having a truly unique experience different to the banking and technology internships on the usual candidate CV.

Why I’d recommend Bath Insights

If you feel unsure about how to access traditional internships, or your background does not follow the ‘standard’ route, Bath Insights shows that there are multiple ways to build a strong and competitive profile.

The programme offers:

meaningful, paid experience

real responsibility

professional skill development

opportunities beyond desk-based work

a supportive, social environment

Looking back, Bath Insights did far more than fill a summer. It strengthened my CV, helped me build lasting friendships, gave me confidence in professional settings, and directly supported my move into technology.

Best of luck to everyone applying. It’s an incredible opportunity, and I learned so much from taking part!

Hi everyone — my name’s Nick Jarvis, and I’m a second-year physics student.
