I arrived in Bath in 2017 to begin my PhD in International Development. At the time, it felt like stepping into a completely new world. Coming from Peru, Bath offered not only the opportunity to study at a high-level academic institution, but also a window into a broader intellectual and cultural environment that would shape my career in ways I could not have anticipated.

What I found at Bath went well beyond formal training. Of course, the academic environment was rigorous and stimulating, and it provided me with the tools to engage seriously with research. But just as important were the relationships I built along the way—both academic and personal. The community at Bath is unusually supportive, and that makes a real difference when you are trying to find your voice as a researcher.

Today, I am an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and Director of the Institute of Human Development of Latin America (IDHAL). I also serve as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities and as a member of the Expert Committee for Poverty Measurement of Peru’s National Institute of Statistics (INEI). My work focuses on multidimensional poverty and wellbeing, combining conceptual and empirical approaches to better understand development challenges in the Global South. In many ways, the foundations of this work were laid during my time at Bath.

Returning recently as a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Development Studies has been a particularly meaningful experience. It has allowed me to reconnect with former professors who are now colleagues, and to engage in discussions that have significantly strengthened my ongoing research on the relationship between objective and subjective multidimensional wellbeing. There is something quite special about returning to the same intellectual space at a different stage of one’s career.

One aspect I value especially, looking back, is the longer-term influence that this experience can have. In recent years, several of my former students in Peru—exceptionally talented young researchers—have gone on to pursue postgraduate studies in development in the United Kingdom. Some of them have told me that my own trajectory played a role in that decision. That is something I take seriously, and it speaks to the broader impact that an academic environment like Bath can have, not only on individual careers but across contexts.

I am especially grateful to Professor James Copestake for hosting me during this visit, and for his continued generosity over the years. I would also like to acknowledge Sam Williams, my former wellbeing advisor, whose support was essential during my time as a student, and my good friend Reverend Nigel Rawlinson, former University Chaplain, whose presence was an important part of my experience in Bath.

If I were to offer one piece of advice to current students, it would be to take full advantage of everything Bath has to offer. This includes, of course, the academic resources, but also the wider experience of living in a city that is both warm and welcoming, and exceptionally conducive to study and reflection. Bath provides an environment where it is possible not only to do good research, but to grow as a person.

Looking back, my time at Bath was not just a stage in my academic training. It was a formative period that continues to shape how I think, work, and engage with others. Returning now, I am reminded of how important that experience was—and how much it continues to matter.

Hi, I'm Jhonatan.
