I'm Thomas. When I first applied for the University of Bath Micro Internship Programme, I saw it primarily as an opportunity to gain professional experience, strengthen my CV, and develop skills that would help me when applying for future internships and placement opportunities.

As a first-year International Development with Economics student, I was already thinking ahead to the competitive placement and internship applications that would come later in my degree. I believed that gaining experience within a real organisation would help me stand out from other candidates while allowing me to develop practical skills that could not be learned solely through lectures and coursework.

Like many students, I was also looking for an opportunity that would allow me to gain valuable work experience while earning alongside my studies. At the time, I viewed the Micro Internship as a short-term opportunity to build my experience. Looking back, it became much more valuable than I initially expected.

Rather than simply being a few weeks of work experience, the internship gave me the opportunity to work directly with a real business, develop practical skills that cannot be learned in a lecture theatre, and gain confidence in my ability to contribute within a professional environment. Perhaps most importantly, it provided experiences and examples that have continued to benefit me long after the internship itself ended.

Working with Prichard Guides

I completed my Micro Internship with Prichard Guides, an educational publishing company that creates GCSE revision resources designed to help students understand difficult concepts through clear explanations and worked examples.

My role focused primarily on content creation and educational marketing. Throughout the internship, I was responsible for designing educational social media content across a range of GCSE subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths.

Over the course of the project, I created a large bank of educational content, including revision posts, worked examples, exam tips, and subject-specific resources designed to engage GCSE students and support their learning. Each piece of content required research, planning, design, and adaptation to ensure that complex concepts could be communicated clearly and effectively.

One of the aspects I enjoyed most was working directly with Tim Prichard, the founder of Prichard Guides. Knowing that my work was contributing to a real business made the experience feel far more meaningful than many university projects. Every piece of content I created had a genuine purpose and audience, and I could see how my efforts were contributing to the company’s growth and online presence.

What initially appeared to be a straightforward content creation role quickly became much more interesting. Each project required me to think carefully about audience engagement, educational communication, branding, and marketing strategy. Rather than simply presenting information, I had to consider how information could be communicated in a way that would genuinely help students learn and retain knowledge.

Although educational publishing is not directly related to the industries I currently hope to pursue in the future, the experience allowed me to develop a wide range of transferable skills that are relevant across many sectors.

Developing professional skills

One of the most valuable aspects of the internship was the opportunity to develop professional skills within a real working environment.

Throughout the project, I communicated directly with Tim, receiving feedback, discussing ideas, and refining content based on business needs. This taught me the importance of professional communication, attention to detail, and responding positively to constructive feedback.

The internship also helped me develop stronger time management skills. Balancing the project alongside lectures, coursework, extracurricular activities, insight programmes, and internship applications required careful organisation and planning.

Perhaps most importantly, I developed greater confidence in working independently. While guidance was always available when needed, much of the responsibility for producing high-quality content rested with me. This encouraged me to take initiative, manage my own workload, and solve problems independently rather than waiting for solutions to be provided.

These are skills that are difficult to fully develop through academic study alone but are essential within any professional environment.

Seeing the impact of my work

Another aspect of the internship that I found particularly rewarding was seeing the impact of the content I created.

On several occasions, students reached out through the company’s social media channels to share how helpful they had found the revision content. Hearing that resources I had created were helping students revise more effectively and feel more confident in their studies was incredibly rewarding.

It reminded me that even relatively small projects can have a meaningful impact on other people when they are designed thoughtfully and with the end user in mind.

Knowing that my work had increased awareness of high-quality revision resources and helped students access useful educational content gave the project a real sense of purpose.

It also helped me appreciate that effective communication is not about including as much information as possible; it is about presenting information in a way that is clear, engaging, and genuinely useful to the intended audience.

The long-term impact

One of the most valuable aspects of the Micro Internship was that the benefits did not end when the project finished.

The experience gave me practical examples that I could draw upon in applications, interviews, networking conversations, and assessment centres throughout my first year.

Rather than relying solely on academic examples, I was able to discuss managing real projects, working directly with a business owner, creating content for a genuine audience, responding to feedback, and delivering work that created value for an organisation.

The internship also strengthened my confidence significantly. Before university, the idea of working directly with a business owner and creating content that represented a company’s brand would have felt quite intimidating. Through the internship, I became much more comfortable taking ownership of projects, presenting ideas, and communicating professionally.

One of the most valuable outcomes was the professional relationship I developed with Tim. Throughout the internship, we worked closely together and built a strong professional relationship. By the end of the project, Tim had kindly offered to act as a professional reference in the future, something that will be extremely valuable when applying for internships, placement years, and graduate opportunities. The experience has also created the possibility of working with Prichard Guides again should future opportunities arise.

The internship also helped strengthen many of my subsequent applications. Throughout my first year, I successfully secured places on a range of insight programmes, employability initiatives, and professional development opportunities. In many of these applications and interviews, I found myself drawing upon examples from the Micro Internship to demonstrate communication, initiative, creativity, problem-solving, and professional skills.

Having real workplace experience to discuss gave me far greater confidence than relying solely on academic examples.

Looking back, I genuinely believe the internship helped strengthen my applications and gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that I might otherwise have felt unprepared for.

Perhaps most importantly, it demonstrated that even as a first-year student, it is possible to make meaningful contributions within a professional environment. That confidence has stayed with me long after the internship ended.

Looking ahead

The Micro Internship provided me with valuable insight into content creation, marketing, and working within a small business environment.

It helped bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice while giving me a clearer understanding of the skills I want to continue developing throughout university.

As I progress through my degree, I hope to continue building on these experiences through future internships, placement opportunities, leadership positions, and professional development programmes.

The internship has given me a stronger foundation for pursuing these opportunities and a greater understanding of how the skills I develop at university can be applied in real-world contexts.

My advice to other students

If I could give one piece of advice to students considering a Micro Internship, it would be simple: apply.

Even if a role feels slightly outside your comfort zone or different from your previous experience, there is enormous value in gaining exposure to a real organisation and professional environment.

A Micro Internship offers far more than a line on your CV. It provides an opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence, gain professional experience, and discover strengths that you may not have realised you possessed.

Even if the industry is not directly aligned with your long-term ambitions, the skills, experiences, and professional relationships you develop can still be incredibly valuable.

That said, if you can secure a Micro Internship within a field that closely aligns with your future career aspirations, the benefits can be even greater. It demonstrates early interest, provides relevant industry experience, and gives you practical examples that can strengthen future internship and placement applications.

For me, what started as a short-term opportunity to gain experience became one of the most valuable professional experiences of my first year at university.

The internship strengthened my employability, expanded my confidence, and helped me better understand the type of work I enjoy doing. That is something far more valuable than any individual project or piece of content I created.

Hi! I'm Thomas.
