For our returning students, you may well be looking forward to catching up with friends... Now, I know I sound like a party pooper, but you may want to consider giving your future a little thought.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/537cb855e4b0b522497d96fe\/t\/54bfe010e4b0a0e8a51f75d8\/1421860881827\/\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>As a first year:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you don\u2019t join a club or society now there is a good chance you won\u2019t have the time or motivation later. You will make new friends and gain the skills that employers want by getting involved and helping out.\u00a0 By\u00a0starting in your first year there is a good chance you will be on the committee by your final year and have great experience on your CV.<\/li>\n<li>Get a part time job. Earn money, gain skills, learn what it is like to have to manage your time effectively and understand the work place. Many employers complain students are not work ready so prove them wrong.<\/li>\n<li>Take notice of the jobs people do, consider if you might like to do that and use the careers support available to help you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As a 2nd year:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Catch up on first year if you missed out!<\/li>\n<li>Work towards getting a summer internship \u2013 you need to be fast if you are interested in some of the larger companies as they tend to open applications in September.\u00a0 Smaller organisations tend to recruit a bit later in the year.<\/li>\n<li>You could volunteer \u2013 more flexibility than a job, but great experience. It can be the ONLY way to get\u00a0experience in certain sectors.<\/li>\n<li>Get a part time job. Explore and experience as much as you can by attending events and talking to each other, and us if you like \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Finalist:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Time to start making applications now for jobs or further study\u00a0after you graduate.\u00a0 If that fills you with horror then it\u2019s time to ask for help.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s not geeky or stupid to use the support and advice around you at the University.
