{"id":481,"date":"2015-11-16T09:58:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-16T09:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/careers\/?p=481"},"modified":"2025-10-22T15:57:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T14:57:54","slug":"will-a-robot-take-your-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/careers\/2015\/11\/16\/will-a-robot-take-your-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Will a robot take your job?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/303334\/er84-the-future-of-work-evidence-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">UK Commission for Employment and Skills<\/a>\u00a0about the future of jobs in 2030;\u00a0futurologists warn that it would be wrong to assume that today\u2019s money spinning careers\u00a0such as banking or law\u00a0\u2013 will remain the best paid jobs of the future.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0Oxford University academics Michael Osborne and Carl Frey have calculated how susceptible to automation each job is based on nine key skills required to perform it - \u00a0social perceptiveness, negotiation, persuasion, assisting and caring for others, originality, fine arts, finger dexterity, manual dexterity and the need to work in a cramped work space. You can even go to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-34066941\" target=\"_blank\"> BBC Technology page<\/a>\u00a0and type in your job title to see how susceptible to automation your job may be.\u00a0Job titles that do not exist now, such as a <em>\u201cvertical farmer\u201d<\/em> or a <em>\u201cbody part maker\u201d<\/em>, could be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/top-20-most-popular-future-jobs-of-2030-vertical-farmer-limb-maker-waste-data-handler-narrowcaster\/\" target=\"_blank\">mainstream professions<\/a>, in much the same way that social media consultants have emerged in the past five years. In fact I am seriously considering changing jobs from Careers Adviser to <a href=\"http:\/\/careers2030.cst.org\/jobs\/robot-counsellor\/\">Robot Counsellor<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming message coming through is that as individuals we need to take greater personal responsibility for acquiring and continuously updating skills\u00a0to remain employable in a rapidly changing workplace.\u00a0The Careers Service are hosting a really interesting workshop this Wednesday led\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/myfuture.bath.ac.uk\/ViewEvent.chpx?id=592117\" target=\"_blank\">Work Ready Graduates<\/a>.
