{"id":604,"date":"2016-03-08T14:12:24","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T14:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/careers\/?p=604"},"modified":"2025-10-22T15:57:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T14:57:38","slug":"achieve-equal-confidence-pledgeforparity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/careers\/2016\/03\/08\/achieve-equal-confidence-pledgeforparity\/","title":{"rendered":"Our #pledgeforparity is to achieve equal confidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/internationalwomensday\/resources\/InternationalWomensDay-landscape.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"903\" height=\"141\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All around the world, International Women\u2019s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/Theme\" target=\"_blank\">Pledge for Parity<\/a> is the theme for the 2016 International Women's Day, encouraging everyone (men and women) to take concrete steps to help achieve gender parity more quickly. Within the careers service we are making\u00a0a pledge to achieve <em>equality in self-confidence<\/em> as we believe lack of self-belief\u00a0is holding women back from achieving their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Institution of Leadership &amp; Management's research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.i-l-m.com\/~\/media\/ILM%20Website\/Downloads\/Insight\/Reports_from_ILM_website\/ILM_Ambition_and_Gender_report_0211%20pdf.ashx\" target=\"_blank\">'Ambition &amp; Gender at Work'<\/a>\u00a0suggests that over 50% of women report feelings of self-doubt about their performance and careers. Time and time again <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2014\/05\/the-confidence-gap\/359815\/?utm_source=huffingtonpost.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=pubexchange_article\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> shows that\u00a0\u00a0women are less self-assured than men\u2014and that to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. \u00a0According to the Huffington Post,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/michelle-mcquaid\/ladies-is-a-lack-of-confidence-holding-your-career-back_b_5497503.html\" target=\"_blank\">confidence<\/a> is what allows you to start acting and risking and failing, to stop mumbling and apologising and hesitating. With it you can take on the world; without it you remain stuck on the starting block of your own potential.<\/p>\n<p>So how can women\u00a0develop confidence?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use empowering language:<\/strong> Aston Universities Vice Chancellor, Professor Dame Julia King \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aston.ac.uk\/news\/releases\/2014\/july\/women-leadership-engineering-and-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">says <\/a>\u00a0women tend to use more cautious, less aggressive\/assertive language, and often apologise for what they are about to say \u00a0- \u2018This isn't quite my subject area, but perhaps you might consider\u2026\u2019 \u2018I am not sure this is exactly relevant, but\u2026\u2019 This can be interpreted as weakness and makes what women\u00a0say easier to dismiss or ignore.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Banish Negative Self-Talk:<\/strong>\u00a0It is\u00a0amazing how self-talk can lead us in to or out of a situation. If you can, take time to visualise the discussion or event going well rather than thinking of the things that may go wrong. \u00a0Ask yourself, 'whats the worst that could happen?' - when you do this, \u00a0you get a clarity\u00a0and a bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/careers\/2015\/02\/06\/women-success-starts-with-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\">fear<\/a> vanishes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take a risk:\u00a0<\/strong>Become comfortable with things that you don\u2019t know, and turn your fear into an eagerness to learn new skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celebrate your successes:<\/strong>\u00a0The best confidence boost is to celebrate your successes and keep reminding yourself of it by writing them on post-it notes. Then have them displayed in an area that you can view each day e.g.\u00a0kitchen, wardrobe, medicine cabinet etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invest in your development:\u00a0<\/strong>This afternoon we are supporting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1734393220138878\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bath Students Union<\/a> by delivering a workshop designed to enable\u00a0women to identify their strengths and values and to harness these\u00a0to pursue positions of leadership. There are plenty of such training opportunities that women can harness on campus from attending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bathstudent.com\/skills-training\/\" target=\"_blank\">skills <\/a>development\u00a0events to participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/157176950\" target=\"_blank\">Sprint<\/a> personal development programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All around the world, International Women\u2019s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.
