I am certainly no stranger to getting stuck in a negative thought loop about something I have said or done, or waking up at 3 in the morning to worry about a big presentation the next day!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I also find that the more I am swept up in my own difficult thoughts and feelings the less able I am to respond to my colleagues, my clients, my friends and family in the ways that are important to me \u2013 I am less able to be reflective, patient, compassionate, less able to listen and more likely to rush to judgement or defensiveness. We know that emotional intelligence, including self-awareness and self-regulation, is a key building block for effective leadership, and yet we are all human, we all struggle with our emotions and thoughts and we all need strategies to help us respond with wisdom and act with purpose.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One small change that can help us work with difficult thoughts and feelings (rather than ignoring or minimising them) is <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">psychological distancing<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 a technique that allows us to create distance from our thoughts, helping us to regulate (but not get rid of!) strong emotions and gain a more objective perspective on our thoughts. They are many ways to create psychological distance and studies show that even small shifts can reduce anxiety and improve task performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1.Get away from it all<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First up, an obvious one \u2013 leave that angry email in draft, get up, get away from the computer, go for a walk or even just lean back in your seat \u2013 getting some literal distance can make all the difference. Many mindful exercises also help to create distance - for example imagining putting your thoughts on leaves in a stream and watching them float away (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ppss-static.cumbria.nhs.uk\/files\/patient-resources\/4.-Leaves-On-A-Stream.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Leaves-On-A-Stream.pdf (nhs.uk)<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2. Name it (don\u2019t shame it)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Emotional literacy is the ability to recognise, express, and handle emotions \u2013 a great way to improve emotional literacy and to create some distance from difficult emotions is to expand your emotional vocabulary and practicing naming your emotions more precisely <span class=\"TextRun SCXW215455279 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215455279 BCX8\">(try an <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW215455279 BCX8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betterup.com\/blog\/emotion-wheel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW215455279 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215455279 BCX8\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">emotion wheel<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW215455279 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215455279 BCX8\"> if you need some in<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215455279 BCX8\">spiration)<\/span><\/span>. Writing them down in a journal is even better, and is my go to method for helping me process difficult emotions. And please remember to approach all emotions with compassion and acceptance rather than with judgement or shame.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3.
