{"id":199,"date":"2025-02-12T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T10:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/changing-ourselves\/?p=199"},"modified":"2025-02-11T17:05:59","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T17:05:59","slug":"bringing-my-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/changing-ourselves\/2025\/02\/12\/bringing-my-best\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing my best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sure we can all relate to a time when we, a colleague, or family member have been away from the workplace for a while. Whatever the circumstances, life events that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pull us away from the workplace can mean there\u2019s change to navigate; they also offer us important learning opportunities. It can feel daunting, exciting (depending on the circumstance), and uncertain all at once.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve recently returned from maternity leave; before my leave, I remember asking myself at the beginning: What can I cover before I go (being as realistic as I could be!)? What does success look like for the team covering my work? What knowledge, information and insight can I share before I leave, and how? These were all questions I could explore, communicate and act on before my leave. Then the question \u2026 how will I manage the transition back to work? How can I bring \u2018my best\u2019 back?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I soon realised it was unhelpful for me to think about returning to work and what this might look like \u2013 I was about to embark on a life-changing event, and I needed to go on that journey of learning to be able to explore the question in my mind. For me, it was about being present in the moment and not focusing too much on what the future holds. And I did just that.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fast forward 11 months and I returned to the question \u2018how will I manage my return to work and be the best I can be?\u2019; it got me thinking about what this might feel like for someone going through the process, and what might help. Here are some personal reflections:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A self-awareness of your boundaries<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: What boundaries do you need to set to support your return, or when you\u2019re going through a period of change? Tawwab describes boundaries as, \u201crules, expectations, needs, and desires that help you feel safe and comfortable in life and in your relationships\u201d (Nedra Glover, 2021). Boundaries can be physical, mental and emotional. Setting healthy boundaries - such as how you\u2019ll manage your time, or relationships\u2013puts you in a position to support yourself, move you toward your values and show up at your best, and avoid overwhelm.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Build in a habit of being kind to yourself (self-compassion).<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> We talk about \u2018bringing your best\u2019 to work, and the challenges this can bring, particularly when the boundaries you\u2019ve set might be blurred or broken. If this happens it might lead to self-judgement. With all the focus on bringing your best to work, and your best to home, what\u2019s sometimes missing is a reflection on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">your own needs in the middle- what am I doing to be kinder to myself as I manage this? One example is practising positive self-talk by forgiving yourself if something didn\u2019t go to plan.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Setting realistic expectations:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> re-integrating back into the workplace, your team and what\u2019s required in your role after time away can feel exciting and challenging. As well as being kind to ourselves, we also need to be mindful of setting realistic expectations.
