Thanks to the\u00a0Bath Insights Internship Scheme, I had the opportunity to spend two months this summer working within the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), specifically in the Curriculum and Academic Development team focusing\u00a0on assessment and feedback.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before starting the internship, despite having completed two years of study at the\u00a0university, I\u00a0wasn\u2019t very familiar\u00a0with the CLT.\u00a0As\u00a0students we rarely\u00a0notice\u00a0the significant amount of work that happens behind the scenes to support learning, teaching and assessment across the University\u00a0and\u00a0we often experience\u00a0the\u00a0end\u00a0result\u00a0without realising how many people, ideas and processes contribute to shaping that experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the\u202fmain projects I\u202fworked on focused\u202fon actionable feedback. This involved collecting\u202fdata from students, facilitating a focus\u202fgroup and analysing\u202fthe findings to\u202fbetter understand students'\u202fexperiences of assessment\u202fand feedback. I\u202fthen produced a\u202freport that I\u202fhope will contribute\u202fto the ongoing\u202fwork to enhance\u202fassessment practices across\u202fthe University. It was particularly\u202finteresting to occupy\u202fthe space between\u202fthe roles of\u00a0a\u202fcurrent student and\u202fsomeone who had\u202fgained\u202finsight into the\u202fUniversity's work on\u202fassessment and feedback. While my own\u202fexperiences\u202fas a student\u202fhelped me relate\u202fto and understand\u202fthe perspectives being\u202fshared, my role\u202fas an intern\u202fencouraged me to\u202fstep\u202fback and think\u202fmore critically about\u202fthe wider systems\u202fthat affect student experiences. Balancing these perspectives\u202fgave me a\u202funique insight into\u202fhow student voices\u202fcan inform change, and it\u202fwas rewarding to\u202fsee how those\u202fperspectives could directly\u202fcontribute to conversations\u202fabout teaching\u202fand learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0also contributed to student-facing communications for the Inclusive Education Procedure. The challenge was to communicate the new procedure in a way that was welcoming and encouraging\u00a0for students whilst also including all the crucial information.\u00a0This\u202fexperience gave\u202fme valuable insight\u202finto the importance\u202fof accessible communication\u202fand the care\u202frequired to ensure\u202fpolicies\u202fare both understandable\u202fand supportive. It\u202falso highlighted how\u202fthoughtful communication\u202fcan shape students' experiences and encourage\u202fthem to engage\u202fconfidently with the\u202fsupport available to\u202fthem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Across\u00a0all\u00a0these projects, one theme stood out to me: the importance of student voice. Throughout the internship I saw how much value colleagues place on listening to students and using those insights to inform enhancement work. At the same time, I developed a much greater appreciation of the practical considerations involved in implementing change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back, this internship has completely changed my understanding of what happens behind the scenes at the University. It has given me a newfound appreciation for the people who work so hard to support learning and teaching.\u00a0I am incredibly grateful to everyone in the\u00a0CLT\u00a0for welcoming me into the team, trusting me with meaningful projects and giving me the\u00a0opportunity to contribute to work that has the potential to make a real difference to students' experiences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
