There was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/unluckiest-generation-bears-brunt-cautious-admissions-round?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily\">a drop in the number of applicants accepted<\/a> at higher tariff universities than last year, which has been ascribed to a reduction of nearly 12,000 available places in those institutions. However, in comparison with 2019, a higher number of students have secured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/level-results-fewer-students-get-first-choice-university?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily\">their first choice university place<\/a> this year (though in percentage terms, because the number of applicants is up, the overall percentage is down, from 55.7% in 2019 to 54.4% now).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Australia, the government has been praised for its method of distributing the country\u2019s 20,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/universities-back-plan-reserve-extra-places-neediest?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily\">extra undergraduate places to disadvantaged students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Pensions<\/h3>\n<p>The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ddlnk.net\/t\/2PRX-1B3MO-23FCED02DE9587694XEUER41612491C9070436\/cr.aspx\">monthly monitoring report<\/a> for the USS pension scheme estimates that it is in surplus of \u00a31.8 billion \u2013 this would represent a major shift from the \u00a314.1 billion deficit cited in the 2020 valuation, though USS is quick to point out that the estimate does not represent a full actuarial valuation. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/pensions-universities-superannuation-scheme-now-reports-surplus?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily\">remains to be seen<\/a> what impact this will have on member contributions, benefits and associated industrial action.<\/p>\n<h3>Student finance<\/h3>\n<p>In light of the cost of living crisis, UCU has called on universities to stop charging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/article\/12482\/Union-demands-an-end-to-the-use-of-non-refundable-deposits-for-post-graduate-courses\">non-refundable deposits<\/a> to prospective postgraduate students. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/uk\/2022\/07\/28\/non-refundable-deposit-universities-named-and-shamed-264793\">The Tab has an article<\/a> looking into this practice. Meanwhile, Wonkhe has an <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/wonk-corner\/student-rents-in-edinburgh-fall-to-200-a-month-and-the-price-of-a-pint-in-london-halves-apparently\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Wonkhe%20summer%20update%20-%2015%20August&amp;utm_content=Wonkhe%20summer%20update%20-%2015%20August+CID_25836d42aa7f084f0f29cf84bc6a5a70&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=Jim%20Dickinson%20looks%20at%20some%20very%20dodgy%20new%20data%20on%20student%20living%20costs\">angry analysis<\/a> of the data in the NatWest Student Living Index.<\/p>\n<h3>High impact journals<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rsos.220334\">recent study<\/a> of around 50,000 behavioural and brain science articles by Dr Zachary Horne from the University of Edinburgh has found that articles in higher-impact journals tended to have lower-quality statistical evidence to support their claims.
