They survey also showed, however, that online learning environments only made 28% of students feel that they belonged to a community.<\/p>\n<h3>Research<\/h3>\n<p>The British Academy has announced the trial of a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/british-academy-trials-awarding-research-grants-lottery?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=21414763&amp;spUserID=MTAyMjQ5OTgzMjYzNQS2&amp;spJobID=2072129574&amp;spReportId=MjA3MjEyOTU3NAS2\">research lottery<\/a>\u201d: applications to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk\/funding\/ba-leverhulme-small-research-grants\/\">small grants scheme<\/a> will be tested to ensure they meet a quality threshold and then selected at random for funding.<\/p>\n<h3>Access and participation<\/h3>\n<p>A record proportion of new students at Cambridge University this year are from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/university-of-cambridge-admits-record-number-of-state-school-pupils-bdrdwp85g\">state school backgrounds<\/a> \u2013 72.5%, up from 71.6% last year.<\/p>\n<h3>Higher Education Funding<\/h3>\n<p>Professor Steve West, President of Universities UK, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universitiesuk.ac.uk\/latest\/insights-and-analysis\/speech-our-president-professor-steve\">called for<\/a> a national conversation to help find a long-term funding solution for higher education. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/labour-very-close-unveiling-sustainable-he-funding-plan?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=21414763&amp;spUserID=MTAyMjQ5OTgzMjYzNQS2&amp;spJobID=2072129574&amp;spReportId=MjA3MjEyOTU3NAS2\">THE says<\/a> that the Labour Party is close to announcing its own higher education funding policy for England.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last week, UKRI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/what-we-offer\/developing-people-and-skills\/find-studentships-and-doctoral-training\/get-a-studentship-to-fund-your-doctorate\/\">announced<\/a> that, in 2022\/23 it was <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/wonk-corner\/pgrs-get-a-13-per-cent-increase-on-their-stipends\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Wonkhe%20Mondays%20-%205%20September&amp;utm_content=Wonkhe%20Mondays%20-%205%20September+CID_e9d28e49278ec799a3b708d78710e05a&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=postgraduate%20researchers%20get%20a%2013%20per%20cent%20increase%20on%20their%20stipends\">increasing its minimum student stipend<\/a> for postgraduate research students by \u00a32,000 on the rate for 2021\/22.<\/p>\n<h3>Regulator<\/h3>\n<p>OfS has published an initial set of revised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/about\/key-performance-measures\/?utm_source=OfS+alerts&amp;utm_campaign=52c90a0185-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_20220908-revised-kpms&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_83cc2ff0b1-52c90a0185-123310117\">KPIs<\/a>, based around the three strategic themes of quality and standards; equality of opportunity; and enabling regulation.<\/p>\n<h3>Free speech and academic freedom<\/h3>\n<p>The Commons Education Select Committee\u2019s inquiry into free speech and academic freedom has held another evidence session, with witnesses from the Universities of Manchester, Sussex and Essex and the OfS.
