The THE reports on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/ministers-release-ps484-million-mitigate-horizon-uncertainty?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=22840719&amp;spUserID=MTAxNzcwODk0OTg1MAS2&amp;spJobID=2114556384&amp;spReportId=MjExNDU1NjM4NAS2\">release of \u00a3484 million<\/a> to mitigate Horizon \u2018uncertainty\u2019. \u00a0Some \u00a3280 million of the new funds will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/news\/280m-to-support-uk-research-and-innovation-during-horizon-europe-delay\/\">distributed by UKRI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Commons Library has <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-9295\/\">published a briefing<\/a> on the progress of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill. The briefing analyses the progress of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill. The Bill has passed the House of Commons and its second reading and committee stage in the House of Lords. \u00a0\u00a0Wonkhe discusses <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/wonk-corner\/three-remaining-issues-with-the-free-speech-bill-as-we-head-towards-report-stage-in-the-lords\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Wonkhe%20Daily%20-%20Wednesday%2023%20November&amp;utm_content=Wonkhe%20Daily%20-%20Wednesday%2023%20November+CID_5cb2a7efd35ab45a1af58954fbec98e4&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=three%20remaining%20issues%20with%20the%20Free%20Speech%20Bill%20as%20we%20head%20towards%20report%20stage%20in%20the%20Lords\">the three remaining issues with the Bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Pay<\/h2>\n<p>Thursday and Friday this week will see strike action at up to 150 UK universities \u2013 with action short of a strike (covering working to contract and not covering for absent colleagues) starting today. \u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/rising\">University and College Union (UCU)<\/a> has secured a nationwide (aggregated) mandate for action covering Universities Superannuation Scheme pensions, pay, and employment conditions \u2013 bringing in many institutions that have not been involved in previous rounds of action.\u00a0 Cleaners, security guards and catering staff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unison.org.uk\/news\/2022\/11\/thousands-of-university-workers-strike-again-over-wages\/\">members of Unison<\/a> will take part in industrial action over pay this week at some universities.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Aberdeen\u2019s principal, George Boyne, has just begun his stint as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/universities-need-more-funding-go-further-pay-says-ucea?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=22792017&amp;spUserID=MTAxNzcwODk0OTg1MAS2&amp;spJobID=2114043141&amp;spReportId=MjExNDA0MzE0MQS2\">chair of the UK\u2019s Universities and Colleges Employers Association<\/a> (Ucea), the pay-setting body.<\/p>\n<p>The gender pay gap means women in UK higher education will effectively work the rest of the year for free, figures from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/equal-pay-day-2022-what-gender-pay-gap-my-university?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=22792017&amp;spUserID=MTAxNzcwODk0OTg1MAS2&amp;spJobID=2114043141&amp;spReportId=MjExNDA0MzE0MQS2\">the THE analysis<\/a> suggest, earning almost \u00a34,000 less than men on average.<\/p>\n<h2>EDI<\/h2>\n<p>TASO (Transforming Access and Student Outcomes in Higher Education) <a href=\"https:\/\/taso.org.uk\/research\/publications\/\">has released new research<\/a> into reducing ethnicity degree awarding gaps through curriculum reform, based on evaluation of two interventions at English universities \u2013 the first an initiative to make curricula more inclusive through measures such as diversifying reading lists, the second a staff toolkit giving guidance on inclusive practice.<\/p>\n<p>A London School of Economics academic has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/editor-quits-over-ultimatum-add-female-author-collection?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=22857099&amp;spUserID=MTAxNzcwODk0OTg1MAS2&amp;spJobID=2114833522&amp;spReportId=MjExNDgzMzUyMgS2\">accused a\u00a0prestigious history journal<\/a> of\u00a0prioritising \u201cidentity politics\u201d over intellectual quality, claiming he was told that a\u00a0proposed special issue would not go ahead unless it\u00a0featured a\u00a0female contributor, reports the THE.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Bristol is launching a consultation on whether to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-bristol-63705816\">rename seven of its buildings<\/a> with links to the slave trade, also covered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchprofessionalnews.com\/rr-news-uk-universities-2022-11-university-of-bristol-consulting-on-building-name-changes\/\">in Research Professional News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>International students<\/h2>\n<p>Advance HE has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advance-he.ac.uk\/news-and-views\/new-literature-review-internationalisation\">literature review on internationalisation<\/a> in higher education, exploring student outcomes and experiences of internationalisation initiatives. The authors argue that more work is needed on how such initiatives impact students, and that inclusion should be at the heart of universities\u2019 internationalisation strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Leading
