href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/about\/who-we-are\/our-student-panel\/\">student panel<\/a>, a session which included discussion of changes to the NSS, OfS\u2019 forthcoming prevalence survey into sexual misconduct within higher education institutions, and the rising cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>OfS has also launched The <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/officeforstudents.org.uk\/launch-of-national-student-survey-2023?e=44947b885e\">National Student Survey (NSS) 2023<\/a>, which is now live for final year undergraduate students to report on their university experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qaa.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/qaa-publishes-self-assessment-report-ahead-of-review-by-international-agency\">published a self-assessment report<\/a> in advance of a European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) quinquennial review.<\/p>\n<h2>Student recruitment<\/h2>\n<p>New <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/leading-universities-cut-undergraduate-recruitment-quarter?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=23734368&amp;spUserID=MTAzMDM1OTQ2MjMyMAS2&amp;spJobID=2152232956&amp;spReportId=MjE1MjIzMjk1NgS2\">undergraduate recruitment fell by up to a quarter<\/a> at some of the UK\u2019s most prestigious universities this autumn, new data show.<\/p>\n<p>UCAS has released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/data-and-analysis\/undergraduate-statistics-and-reports\/ucas-undergraduate-sector-level-end-cycle-data-resources-2022\">provider level<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/data-and-analysis\/undergraduate-statistics-and-reports\/ucas-undergraduate-sector-level-end-cycle-data-resources-2022\/2022-entry-ucas-undergraduate-reports-sex-area-background-and-ethnic-group\">equalities<\/a> data for the 2022 End of Cycle, completing the publication of official statistics from the last undergraduate recruitment cycle.<\/p>\n<p>A new British Academy report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk\/publications\/studying-shape-2022\/\">Studying SHAPE: 2022<\/a>, is the first in a planned annual series of trend data on uptake of social science and humanities subjects at level 2 and 3 across the UK.<\/p>\n<h2>Training and employment opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Engineering UK has launched an inquiry into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringuk.com\/research-policy\/fit-for-the-future-growing-and-sustaining-engineering-and-technology-apprenticeships-for-young-people\/\">decline in apprenticeship starts in engineering<\/a>, to be led by peers Jim Knight and David Willetts.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute for Fiscal Studies has <a href=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/publications\/are-kids-alright-early-careers-education-leavers-covid-19-pandemic\">published a report<\/a> detailing the experiences faced by graduates entering the workforce during an economic downturn. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/01\/11\/lockdown-recession-will-blight-careers-million-graduates-warns\/\">The Telegraph<\/a> also covers the story.<\/p>\n<p>Discover Uni has worked with UK Interactive Entertainment (Ukie) on the redevelopment of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/news-blog-and-events\/press-and-media\/discover-uni-works-with-ukie-to-bring-students-and-employers-closer-together-in-the-video-gaming-industry\/?utm_source=OfS+alerts&amp;utm_campaign=2424b1243d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2023_01_10_11_12&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-2424b1243d-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D\">UK Games Map<\/a>, which will bring students and employers closer together in the video gaming industry.<\/p>\n<h2>Fees, funding and cost of living<\/h2>\n<p>Students in England this September will receive an increase in maximum maintenance loans of just 2.4 per cent, the <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-statements\/detail\/2023-01-11\/hcws491\">Department for Education has announced<\/a>, with the result that students from the poorest families will be around \u00a31,500 worse off than if maintenance levels had kept pace with inflation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/students-ps1500-poorer-maintenance-loans-lag-after-inflation?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;spMailingID=23695322&amp;spUserID=MTAzMDM1OTQ2MjMyMAS2&amp;spJobID=2151595502&amp;spReportId=MjE1MTU5NTUwMgS2\">Times Higher Education<\/a> also reports.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian covers news of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2023\/jan\/09\/students-at-university-of-manchester-on-rent-strike-over-cost-of-living-crisis\">rent strike<\/a> in halls of residence at The University of Manchester over the cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>The Times has comments from Universities UK chief executive Vivienne Stern on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/climate-crisis-will-hit-all-students-warns-universities-uk-chief-vivienne-stern-trxkc77p5\">climate crisis and the cost of living<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Staff pay and conditions<\/h2>\n<p>The University and College Union (UCU) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/article\/12675\/UCEAs-failure-to-make-pay-offer-puts-universities-on-collision-course-with-unprecedented-strikes-UCU-says\">claimed<\/a> that Monday\u2019s New JNCHES negotiating meeting did not see the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) put an upgraded pay offer on the table for the 2022-23 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>The Universities and Colleges Employers Association has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucea.ac.uk\/our-work\/collective-pay-negotiations-landing\/2023-24-new-jnches-pay-round\/\">written<\/a> to the five trade unions participating in the 2023-24 pay round. The new pay offer would see a minimum 4 per cent uplift to pay in 2023-24, with those on lower salaries seeing up to a 7 per cent uplift.<\/p>\n<p>This week saw Irene Tracey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2023-01-10-made-oxford-vice-chancellor-professor-irene-tracey-sets-out-vision\">inauguration<\/a> as Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2023-01-10-new-vice-chancellor-ready-fire-and-wire-university-oxford-and-world\">speech<\/a> at the ceremony she announced a new commission on all aspects of staff pay and conditions.
