The Science Minister has also <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2021-03-19\/172097\">answered a question<\/a> on this in Parliament, and UCU has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/article\/11477\/Stop-savage-university-research-funding-cuts-union-tells-Chancellor?list=1676\">written<\/a> to the Chancellor to express its opposition to the cuts in funding.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the government\u2019s war on red tape, BEIS has announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/review-launched-to-reduce-red-tape-for-uk-researchers\">independent review<\/a> into research bureaucracy, which will look at, amongst other things, practical solutions to bureaucratic issues faced by researchers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ADMISSIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The House of Commons Education Select Committee has <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/203\/education-committee\/news\/153160\/awarding-of-student-grades-committee-writes-to-secretary-of-state-with-concerns-over-the-alternative-arrangements-for-2021\/\">written<\/a> to the Secretary of State to express concerns that the alternative arrangements for awarding exam grades this year risk worsening existing grade inflation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifs.org.uk\/publications\/15383\">report<\/a> from the Institute for Fiscal Studies has found that most graduates earn higher salaries than their non-graduate peers, but that there are big differences by socioeconomic background and ethnicity, with black graduates in particular earning less than white graduates. A Wonkhe <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blogs\/who-benefits-from-higher-education-study\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Wonkhe%20Daily%20-%20Friday%2026%20March&amp;utm_content=Wonkhe%20Daily%20-%20Friday%2026%20March+CID_6ca23fe9f51c183989699210a329504f&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=A%20new%20report%20from%20IFS%20shows%20that%20ethnicity%20and%20disadvantaged%20backgrounds%20play%20a%20large%20part%20in%20graduate%20earning%20expectations\">analysis<\/a> shows that Department for Educational longitudinal data confirms this conclusion, and a Social Market Foundation report has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smf.co.uk\/publications\/graduate-outcomes-in-london\/\">further evidence of this trend<\/a> in London, too.
