{"id":41,"date":"2021-06-25T09:15:15","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T08:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/council-digest\/?p=41"},"modified":"2021-06-25T09:15:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T08:15:15","slug":"access-barriers-and-worrying-sector-survey-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/council-digest\/2021\/06\/25\/access-barriers-and-worrying-sector-survey-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Access barriers and worrying sector survey results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ACCESS, WIDENING PARTICIPATION AND INCLUSION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suttontrust.com\/news-opinion\/all-news-opinion\/government-loans-have-helped-widen-access-to-postgraduate-study-but-rising-tuition-fees-threaten-progress\/\">report by the Sutton Trust<\/a> has found that access to postgraduate courses by students from working class backgrounds has improved, with the proportion of working class graduates progressing to taught masters doubling from 6% to 12.9% between 2013\/14 and 2014\/17. However, the insufficiency of loans available may still present a financial barrier to further study. Meanwhile, the House of Commons Education Select Committee has <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm5802\/cmselect\/cmeduc\/85\/8502.htm\">published a report<\/a> that concludes that white working class pupils have been let down by the education system: the report\u2019s comments on the term \u201cwhite privilege\u201d have <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm5802\/cmselect\/cmeduc\/85\/8502.htm\">proved controversial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>OfS has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/news-blog-and-events\/press-and-media\/office-for-students-to-examine-assessment-practices\/\">launched a review<\/a> of the use of inclusive assessment practices that disregard poor spelling, punctuation and grammar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>STUDENT ISSUES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/2021\/06\/24\/the-student-academic-experience-survey-2021\/\">Student Academic Experience Survey<\/a>, conducted by HEPI and Advance HE, has found that 44% of students surveyed think they received poor or very poor value from their experience in higher education this year: just 1 in 4 rated their experience good or very good. The three top areas identified for improvement were assessment and person, increasing in-person and campus activities and communication. Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cibyl.com\/cibyl-insights\/university-best-time-our-lives\">report<\/a> by Accenture and Cibyl presents a bleak picture of student mental health, with 4 in 10 reporting a deterioration in their mental health since starting University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUALITY AND STANDARDS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/commons\/2021-06-21\/debates\/55E464B3-BF64-41C2-A7B2-CE413069CAE7\/OralAnswersToQuestions\">told the House of commons<\/a> he would introduce post-qualification admissions whether the higher education sector supported it or not.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary of State has also made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/education-secretary-at-hepi-conference-learning-from-the-crisis\">speech<\/a> calling upon universities to uphold academic standards \u2013 as ever Wonkhe has done an <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/wonk-corner\/what-did-williamson-say-at-hepi-conference\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Wonkhe%20Daily%20-%20Friday%2025%20June&amp;utm_content=Wonkhe%20Daily%20-%20Friday%2025%20June+CID_a4f69ff403c46911bd0ac7a7c3a3012a&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=Ive%20pulled%20out%20the%20important%20bits%20over%20on%20Wonk%20Corner\">analysis<\/a>.
