in the most recent year the rate was 3 student suicides per 100,000 students \u2013 the lowest rate observed in four years. \u00a0A bereaved family suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/university-processes-must-change-say-natasha-abraharts-parents?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;mc_cid=1bf40995d8&amp;mc_eid=2f960c2e8d\">helping students with mental health issues<\/a> is not just about funding counsellors and support services but also about reforming practices that may be discriminatory.<\/p>\n<h3>Freedom of Speech Bill<\/h3>\n<p>The Secretary of State for Education has tabled an amendment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bills.parliament.uk\/bills\/2862\/publications\">Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill<\/a>, which would place restrictions on partnerships between universities and overseas organisations to deliver foreign language, culture, exchange programmes, or courses - requiring such arrangements to be reported to the Office for Students, and giving the regulator the ability to require that partnerships with organisations of concern are terminated.<\/p>\n<p>One university has revised its policy on harassment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/free-speech-union-legal-pressure-forces-essex-harassment-changes?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial-daily&amp;mc_cid=c74f522681&amp;mc_eid=2f960c2e8d\">under legal pressure from the Free Speech Union<\/a>, raising the prospect of more legal actions against institutions if England\u2019s free speech bill becomes law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EDI OfS has published updated equality, diversity and student characteristics data, which look at the proportion and numbers of students in higher education from a range of different demographic groups.
