We are not going to attempt to summarise all of the changes to the Conservative front benches here but, of note, is the appointment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/andrea-jenkyns\">Andrea Jenkyns<\/a> as Minister for Skills, Further and Higher Education, following the appointment (and swift resignation) of the Michelle Donelan as Secretary of State for Education.<\/p>\n<h2>Quality and regulation<\/h2>\n<p>Last week Universities UK and GuildHE members committed to \u201creversing pandemic grade inflation\u201d and returning to pre-pandemic levels of upper degree classification by 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blogs\/can-we-ever-go-back-to-less-inflated-grades\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Wonkhe%20Mondays%20-%2011%20July&amp;utm_content=Wonkhe%20Mondays%20-%2011%20July+CID_6b2df21ba2a64ea68156769be05d1b23&amp;utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&amp;utm_term=David%20Kernohan%20wonders%20if%20we%20have%20lost%20sight%20of%20the%20fundamentals\">This article on Wonkhe<\/a> asks if we can ever go back to less inflated grades.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/tory-leadership-hopeful-kemi-badenoch-attacks-pointless-degrees\">Conservative leadership candidate Kemi Badenoch<\/a> has promised to tackle \u201cpointless\u201d and \u201ccostly\u201d degrees if she is chosen as the UK\u2019s next prime minister.<\/p>\n<h2>Finance and funding<\/h2>\n<p>On Thursday Research England published its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/news\/research-england-8-billion-investment-in-englands-universities\/\">funding decisions<\/a> for university research knowledge and exchange, which included a 10% increase in quality-related research funding.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/ref-related-funding-rise-10-cent-ps2-billion-year\">The Times has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a report from UKRI suggests that university spin-out companies are twice as likely to succeed if they receive Innovate UK funding. You can read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/news\/spinouts-twice-as-likely-to-succeed-with-funding-agency-support\/\">press release<\/a> on UKRI\u2019s website and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/ukri-backed-university-spin-outs-twice-successful\">The Times<\/a> also has the story.<\/p>\n<p>The Department for Education has published its 2021\/22 <a href=\"https:\/\/explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk\/find-statistics\/student-loan-forecasts-for-england\/2021-22\">student loan forecasts for England<\/a>. Headlines include that full-time UG higher education students who started in the academic year 2021\/22 are expected to borrow an average of \u00a342,000 over the course of their studies and only 20% of that same cohort are expected to repay their loan in full.<\/p>\n<h2>Admissions and outreach<\/h2>\n<p>The Times Higher Education reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/ucas-disadvantaged-students-apply-record-numbers\">record numbers of students are expected to start courses<\/a> in UK higher education in the next academic year, with 44% of 18 year olds applying through UCAS. The data also shows an increase in applications from students from disadvantaged neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<h2>Student experience<\/h2>\n<p>Last week saw the publication of the 2022 National Student Survey results.\u00a0 Advance HE have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advance-he.ac.uk\/knowledge-hub\/office-students-ofs-national-student-survey-nss-2022?_cldee=GxZ7ixukXeJYQ7CNBX1T3k2QmZP5-ZTS5Bcu2CEG78qFlRi8tYTat3vNCOVjvyAr&amp;recipientid=lead-9780d20488a0ec11b4000022481b0dbc-507c12dc8e2b47e292b06502ae306013&amp;utm_source=ClickDimensions&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Governance%20News%20Alerts&amp;esid=82823d99-fd00-ed11-82e6-0022481b5e9e\">produced a useful summary<\/a> of the headlines, for those that do not want to plough their way through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/advice-and-guidance\/student-information-and-data\/national-student-survey-nss\/\">the full data set<\/a>. Bath was delighted to retain its position <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/bath-retains-1st-place-in-england-in-nss-2022-when-comparing-guardian-university-guide-institutions\/\">as the highest scoring institution in England<\/a>, and third in the UK overall, when compared to the 121 Higher Education institutions listed in the Guardian University Guide.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.org.uk\/articles\/cost-of-living-rise-sees-96-of-students-cutting-back\">NUS published the results of a survey of 3500 university students<\/a>, college students and apprentices which found that 96% were cutting back due to the rising cost of living. The survey also found that 11% of students were accessing food banks, compared with 5% in January 2022, reflecting the rapid increase in inflation in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/news-blog-and-events\/press-and-media\/universities-and-nhs-mental-health-services-link-up-to-close-gaps-in-student-support\/?utm_source=OfS+alerts&amp;utm_campaign=42a196a5a2-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_07_12_NHS_PARTNERSHIPS&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_83cc2ff0b1-42a196a5a2-358657798\">OfS announced that it would be distributing \u00a315m to universities and colleges for 2022\/23 to fund student mental health support<\/a>.
