At the University of Bath, we define innovation as <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cthe creation and application of knowledge to generate solutions that deliver societal, economic, or environmental value.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That definition feels particularly relevant today. As highlighted in a recent leadership discussion,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cwe face multiple and overlapping challenges globally, but also rapid progress and new opportunities to find social, environmental, and technological solutions.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Yet there is a warning too:\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cwe cannot assume past strategies for achievement will continue to be successful or sustainable in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Innovation, therefore, sits at the point where need meets possibility; the discipline of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aligning\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0needed with\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0possible<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Success is not about doing more. It is about focusing our efforts where they can have the greatest impact. As the presentation notes, organisations must <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cfocus on fewer priorities to a high degree of excellence and impact.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In an increasingly complex world, innovation is no longer optional.
