{"id":1048,"date":"2011-11-13T17:47:47","date_gmt":"2011-11-13T17:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1048"},"modified":"2011-11-13T17:47:47","modified_gmt":"2011-11-13T17:47:47","slug":"listening-to-architects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/11\/13\/listening-to-architects\/","title":{"rendered":"Listening to Architects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had the rare privilege on Friday of listening to UK and US architects talking together about school design with sustainability in mind \u2013 not that the US folk talk about sustainability or carbon reduction all that much, not when TEA-party types are likely to leap out of the darkness and jump up and down to remind everyone that there is no such thing as climate change. \u00a0They have to talk about energy, and one of the British speakers noted that it would be good if we were to as well, given that energy reduction is clear-cut whereas carbon reduction isn't: you can cut carbon, but increase energy use, for example \u2013 well, if you're perverse enough.<\/p>\n<p>In between Academy visits, a 50 strong delegation form the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aia.org\">AIA<\/a> \u2013 the American Institute of Architects \u2013 spend a couple of hours in Frome, at the wonderfully ancient [ c. 1707 ] Rook Lane <a href=\"www.rooklanearts.org.uk\">chapel<\/a> where there were presentations from US and UK architects \u2013 and from me, but I was only talking about the UK school systems, and their links to sustainability. \u00a0We each had a liberating \u00a05 minutes and one slide, though some interpreted this creatively. \u00a0But, if I were an architect, I'd want to show my pictures as well.<\/p>\n<p>It was a rich meeting, and it is always good to hear professionals trading experiences, problems and solutions with a generosity of spirit.<\/p>\n<p>My top take-away bit of info was <em>58 million<\/em>. \u00a0This, it seems, is the number of uninsulated cavity walls in the UK. \u00a0You really do have to ask how can this be given all the noise about energy efficiency\u00a0over 20+ years. \u00a0How desperate!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had the rare privilege on Friday of listening to UK and US architects talking together about school design with sustainability in mind \u2013 not that the US folk talk about sustainability or carbon reduction all that much, not when...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1048","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1048","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1048"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1048\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1048"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1048"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1048"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
