{"id":1082,"date":"2011-11-27T17:07:59","date_gmt":"2011-11-27T17:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1082"},"modified":"2011-11-27T17:07:59","modified_gmt":"2011-11-27T17:07:59","slug":"cradle-to-cradle-to-what-exactly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/11\/27\/cradle-to-cradle-to-what-exactly\/","title":{"rendered":"Cradle to cradle to ... what exactly?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the Management International Conference in\u00a0Portoro\u017e, I listened to a confident presentation about <em>cradle to cradle<\/em> ideas by Albin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epeaswitzerland.com\/epea-switzerland\/team-netzwerk-partner\/albin-kaelin\/\">K\u00e4lin<\/a>, CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epeaswitzerland.com\">EPEA<\/a> Switzerland. \u00a0I suppose I should say Cradle to Cradle<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcdonough.com\/cradle_to_cradle.htm\">\u00ae<\/a> as this phrase has been registered. \u00a0Anyway.<\/p>\n<p>EPEA Switzerland says that it<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>implements with an experienced management team Cradle to Cradle\u00ae\u00a0projects in all industries in Switzerland, Austria\u00a0and the textile industry worldwide ... .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In terms of efficient husbanding and use of increasingly scarce and expensive resources, and the shift to more of a design philosophy that it entails, all this seems self-evidently a good idea, and something to welcome, as is the positive focus on the quality and integrity of both processes and materials. \u00a0But I think there may be an elephant in this cradle, if I can mince my metaphors. \u00a0It's captured in this question which I asked K\u00e4lin:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whilst I can see the sense of this approach to resources and to product design, it seems that one might argue that the two most obvious outcomes will be [1] sustained (in the enduring sense) corporate profits, and [2] rich consumers with an eased conscience. \u00a0It is less obvious that this will be of any help to the world's poorest billions. \u00a0I wonder how you respond to this.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His answer was not convincing \u2014 in fact, it wasn't an answer\u00a0to the question at all. \u00a0Had the question been asked by an EPEA insider, it would have seems almost blasphemous, I suppose, whereas because it came from me, an outsider, it was merely an attempted critical opening to conversation.<\/p>\n<p>There <em>does<\/em> need to be a convincing answer, though, as the question will get asked by people much less sympathetic to the idea, and much more anti-capitalist, than I am.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Management International Conference in\u00a0Portoro\u017e, I listened to a confident presentation about cradle to cradle ideas by Albin K\u00e4lin, CEO of EPEA Switzerland. \u00a0I suppose I should say Cradle to Cradle\u00ae as this phrase has been registered. \u00a0Anyway.
