{"id":1129,"date":"2011-12-28T18:26:57","date_gmt":"2011-12-28T18:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1129"},"modified":"2011-12-28T18:26:57","modified_gmt":"2011-12-28T18:26:57","slug":"esd-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/12\/28\/esd-is\/","title":{"rendered":"ESD is ..."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just what, exactly? \u00a0Well, I read a comment recently\u00a0that ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>ESD is education that addresses the inter-relatedness of social justice, ecological integrity and economics<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, how I wish it did, but the sort of ESD that I usually come across (or read and hear about) never seems to do this. \u00a0Rather, most of those who espouse or promote ESD know little about economics, and teach less. \u00a0 If it is there at all, economics usually comes to the party dressed as politics, and then is often just a caricature that's positive (usually socialist \u2013 huzzar!), or negative (usually neoliberal \u2013 boo!), according to taste.<\/p>\n<p>And anyway, the phrase doesn't really work: <em>social justice<\/em> and <em>ecological integrity<\/em> are values and desired universal global social outcomes, whereas <em>economics<\/em> is a discipline and a process \u2013 often, it should be said, quite a political one. \u00a0However, if education actually did set out to explore ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"the inter-relatedness of social justice and ecological integrity through economics\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>then we might be getting somewhere, especially as the exploring of the inter-relatedness of these issues <em>through<\/em> economics is exactly the process of everyday politics and government \u2014 and hence is citizenly. \u00a0This seems much needed when\u00a0the continuing existences of poverty and the processes of ecological disintegration are fundamentally political (policy) choices that we make \u2013 using economics to bring them about. \u00a0As Steve Gough once said, there seems nothing more sustainable than poverty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just what, exactly? \u00a0Well, I read a comment recently\u00a0that ...
