{"id":121,"date":"2009-10-06T08:26:21","date_gmt":"2009-10-06T07:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=121"},"modified":"2009-10-06T08:26:21","modified_gmt":"2009-10-06T07:26:21","slug":"fieldwork-doesnt-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2009\/10\/06\/fieldwork-doesnt-pay\/","title":{"rendered":"Fieldwork doesn't Pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More precisely, fieldwork doesn't pay if you're a lawyer, it seems. \u00a0Thanks to Nick Jones for spotting this in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/education\/2009\/oct\/02\/school-trips-teachers-legal-action\">Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Freedom of Information Act\u00a0investigation of local authorities\u00a0by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countryside-alliance.org.uk\/\">Countryside Alliance<\/a> [ CA ] \u00a0\u2013 138 responded \u2013 has found that o<span style=\"border-collapse: collapse\">f the very many individual school trips taken over the past 10 years, 364 ended in legal action. \u00a0In fewer than half of these [ 156 ] however, were schools found to be culpable, and between 1998 and 2008, the total compensation paid out was \u00a3404,952 [ an average of \u00a3293.44 per year, per authority ]. \u00a0 Further details of the CA work can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countryside-alliance.org.uk\/rural-services\/rural-services-campaigns\/the-alliance\u2019s-education-campaign-featured-in-the-guardian.\/\">here<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"border-collapse: collapse\">Arising out of an enquiry carried out for them by the NFER\u00a0in their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfer.ac.uk\/what-we-offer\/teacher-voice\/teacher-voice_home.cfm\">Teacher Voice<\/a> surveys, one of the points made by the Alliance is:\u00a0\"Whilst 85% of young people would like the chance to be able to enjoy activities like fishing, falconry and farm visits through school, only 46% of children actually had been on a trip to the countryside with their school in the past year.\" \u00a0Curiously, this thirst for fishing, falconry and farms goes unreported in the Guardian: \u00a0\"A separate poll of 2,127 children aged six to 15 found that while 85% of young people would like more school trips, only 46% of children had been to the countryside with their school in the past year.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"border-collapse: collapse\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"border-collapse: collapse\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More precisely, fieldwork doesn't pay if you're a lawyer, it seems. \u00a0Thanks to Nick Jones for spotting this in the Guardian.
