{"id":1269,"date":"2012-01-24T14:41:35","date_gmt":"2012-01-24T14:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1269"},"modified":"2012-01-24T14:41:35","modified_gmt":"2012-01-24T14:41:35","slug":"more-on-national-curriculum-revisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/01\/24\/more-on-national-curriculum-revisions\/","title":{"rendered":"More on national curriculum revisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/01\/13\/promoting-understanding-of-sustainability-in-the-stewardship-of-resources\/\">posting<\/a>, I commented that\u00a0the expert group's\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/publications\/standard\/publicationDetail\/Page1\/DFE-00135-2011\">proposal<\/a> to government that an aim of the revised curriculum ought to be to ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Promote understanding of sustainability in the stewardship of resources locally, nationally and globally<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>was a pertinent phrasing given that the availability and use of resources are key to the way that our lives and civilisation will (be able to) develop. \u00a0The more I have thought about this, the more convinced I have become. \u00a0The following seem pertinent points:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Resources <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>refers both to biological (species and ecosystems) and physical systems (energy and materials) and so there is a ready and multi-point curriculum connection to science and geography<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>are at the heart of our quest to be more sustainable and refer to actual problems (i.e., resource overuse, species extinction), rather than symptoms (e.g., climate change) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>are the focal point of the <em>circular economy <\/em>work of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation where preserving resource quality is key<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>sits well with schools' current obsession on recycling and waste.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Stewardship<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>has distinct curriculum niches in citizenship, religious studies and <em>ethics<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>is <strong>the<\/strong> idea at the heart of our caring for the future<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>has a clear link to global citizenship, ecological justice and development<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>sits well with many schools' emphasis on caring.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>... and the proposal brings these important issues together \u2013 which is more than most schools ever manage to do.<\/p>\n<p>As nearly all the points made above are contentious if taken too far, <em>the stewardship of resources<\/em> sit well with the development of responsible critical thinking.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds better and better ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent posting, I commented that\u00a0the expert group's\u00a0proposal to government that an aim of the revised curriculum ought to be to ...
