{"id":1474,"date":"2012-03-07T18:45:31","date_gmt":"2012-03-07T18:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2012-03-07T18:45:31","modified_gmt":"2012-03-07T18:45:31","slug":"salute-the-non-conformist-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/03\/07\/salute-the-non-conformist-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Salute the non-conformist 2%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eco-Schools Scotland <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecoschoolsscotland.org\">report<\/a>s that 98% of local authority schools have now joined the movement.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the Holyrood administration sees Eco-schools as a vector for its policies, and has told schools to sign up, this is no surprise, perhaps. \u00a0Or the fact that 60% of such schools now have the silver award, and over 40% have green flags.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Michael Russell MSP<\/span>, Scottish\u00a0Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><em>The Eco-Schools programme engages children and young people in key issues including the environment, sustainability, global citizenship and the value of a low carbon future. The growing numbers of Eco-Schools in Scotland is inspiring and I would like to congratulate everyone involved and encourage you all to keep doing all you can to reduce the carbon footprint of your school, home and community.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maybe; but you have to be naive to believe that all this means anything very much without knowing considerably more about what young people are learning \u2013 and doing as a result \u2013 a rather classic confusion of means and ends, I think.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, perhaps we should salute the 2% of schools who seem determined to hold out against being told what to do by politicians \u2013 a disposition that will still be needed when societies are sustainable \u2013 and one that used to be valued strongly in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Happy days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eco-Schools Scotland reports that 98% of local authority schools have now joined the movement.
