{"id":1577,"date":"2012-03-20T14:40:24","date_gmt":"2012-03-20T14:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1577"},"modified":"2012-03-20T14:40:24","modified_gmt":"2012-03-20T14:40:24","slug":"eauc-endorses-the-higher-education-sustainability-initiative-for-rio20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/03\/20\/eauc-endorses-the-higher-education-sustainability-initiative-for-rio20\/","title":{"rendered":"EAUC endorses Rio+20 initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eauc.org.uk\/eauc_endorses_the_higher_education_sustainabili\">EAUC<\/a> has endorsed the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative for Rio+20, and is clearly pleased at being asked:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The EAUC is delighted to announce that it has joined a number of other international organisations to officially endorse the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative for Rio+20. \u00a0As part of Rio+20, leaders of the international academic community are being called upon to commit to the development of sustainable practices for Higher Education Institutions. \u00a0In line with the EAUC's rising international profile and as a result of our continued international collaboration with other tertiary education sector bodies around the world, the EAUC was invited and has agreed to officially endorse the declaration below<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAs Chancellors, Presidents, Rectors, Deans and Leaders of Higher Education Institutions and related organizations, we acknowledge the responsibility that we bear in the international pursuit of sustainable development. \u00a0On the occasion of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro from 20-22 June 2012, we agree to support the following actions:<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Teach sustainable development concepts \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Encourage research on sustainable development issues \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Green our campuses<\/em><em> \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Support sustainability efforts \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Engage with and share results through international frameworks \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/\">posted<\/a> the whole thing last week and noted that there were many things listed which universities already do \u2013 and ought to do, for example, \u00a0[<strong>2]<\/strong>, [<strong>3],<\/strong> [<strong>4]<\/strong> and [<strong>5]<\/strong>. \u00a0But I thought that [<strong>1]<\/strong> was quite another matter entirely.\u00a0 This is its full version <strong>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>1]\u00a0Teach sustainable development concepts<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>ensuring that they form a part of the core curriculum across all disciplines so that future higher education graduates develop skills necessary to enter sustainable development workforces and have an explicit understanding of how to achieve a society that values people, the planet and profits in a manner that respects the finite resource boundaries of the earth.
